Body – Front: Renewing Consoles and Subframe Brackets

B-pillar reinforcement (9.1-9.3) has a critical step: marking areas where welding is forbidden (9.3.2). That’s because the inner beltline reinforcement can’t take the heat. I’ve seen guys blow through that steel and then wonder why the door won’t latch.

Who Needs This Manual?

If you’re a body shop technician, you need it because your frame machine is only as good as the reference data you feed it. If you’re a DIYer doing rust repair on a Golf, you need it because welding in a new wheel housing (section 50, part 7) without the factory cut lines means you’ll either overlap too much or leave a gap. Can I use these torque values for suspension bolts?
Not directly. The manual covers body-specific fasteners (subframe brackets, bumper mounts, console bolts). Suspension torque specs are in the chassis manual. But it does list thread repair procedures for the subframe mounting points – you’ll need those if you strip a bolt hole.
