Description
Toyota Supra Service Manual – OEM Factory Specs for MK3

You are working on a Toyota Supra Service Manual job and the aftermarket manual you bought online says the head bolt torque is 65 ft-lbs. Then the head gasket leaks on the test drive and you are pulling the head again. I have seen that happen. The factory Toyota Supra Service Manual gives you the exact spec – not a guess, not a translation error. This is the 1338-page OEM document that came from Toyota. Every torque value, clearance, and step was verified on the assembly line. If you want to do this job once, you use the real spec.
Engine Mechanical Section (EM) – Torque to the Mark
Section EM covers the 7M-GE and 7M-GTE engines. The manual breaks down every bolt in the cylinder head sequence with the exact angle and torque in ft-lbs. You get the SST part numbers for the valve spring compressor and the camshaft holding tool. The oil pump clearance specs are in there, and the piston ring end gap for the turbo motor is different from the NA. Look at the Standard Bolt Torque Specifications on page 26 if you need a general reference – but the EM section gives you the specific numbers for the head, main bearing cap, and connecting rod. Aftermarket manuals often skip the torque sequence diagram. This one shows it step by step, with a picture of which bolt to tighten first. No interpretation required.
Cooling System (CO) – Pressure Check and Bleed
Section CO tells you the exact capacity for the cooling system in quarts, and the thermostat opening temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. The fan clutch service procedure is written for the shop – you need the SST 09231-22010 to remove the clutch. The manual includes the radiator cap pressure test spec and the bleed procedure for the turbo model. Overheating on a Supra is usually a clogged radiator or a bad fan clutch. The troubleshooting table on the first page of the section lists the possible causes and the remedy. You do not guess – you read the table and check the thermostat first. That saves you a head gasket job.
Transmission – Manual (MT) and Automatic (AT A340E)
The MT section gives you the clutch release bearing specs and the flywheel runout limits. The AT section on the A340E (section 15) is a full rebuild manual inside the book – valve body disassembly, accumulator piston clearance, and the clutch pack clearance with the SST tool. The automatic transmission fluid fill procedure requires the fluid at a specific temperature, and the manual tells you to check it with the engine running and the transmission in Park. The line pressure specs are in psi. If you are swapping a transmission, section 16 covers the propeller shaft – including the phasing marks on the U-joints. No aftermarket manual gives you the phasing marks. This one does.
Suspension – Front (FA) and Rear (RA) with OEM Alignment Specs
Section FA covers the front suspension: strut replacement with the SST for spring compression, control arm bushing torque, and the wheel bearing preload. Section RA covers the rear: lateral link, trailing link, and the differential mount. The alignment spec is listed in degrees and inches of toe – front camber, caster, toe; rear camber and toe. The manual includes the SST number for the rear toe adjusting tool. If you replace the rear control arm bushings without the factory spec, the car will pull one way. I have seen it.
Brake System (BR) – Master Cylinder and ABS Diagnostics
Section BR has the brake pad thickness spec, rotor runout limit, and the ABS actuator test procedure. The master cylinder pushrod clearance is spec’d in inches. The parking brake cable adjustment is step-by-step – you turn the adjuster at the equalizer, not the handle. The SRS Airbag section (AB) is critical – the manual has a warning page about disconnecting the battery and waiting before working near the airbag module. Follow that page. The SRS Airbag precautions are in the Introduction section (pages IN-7 to IN-9). Read those before you touch the steering wheel. I will say that again: read those warnings.
7 Systems Covered: Why OEM Documentation Matters
The table of contents lists 28 sections from Introduction to Electrical Wiring Diagrams. Every section has a troubleshooting table, component locations, and the SST (Special Service Tool) list from section C. You get the part numbers for the tools. You do not have to guess which tool to buy. The Electrical Wiring Diagrams in section D are color-coded and include connector views. Aftermarket wiring diagrams often merge wires from different years. This manual is for the MK3 Supra (pre-1990) – the diagrams match your car if the VIN is correct. I have been burned by a generic wiring diagram that had the pinout reversed for the O2 sensor. Not with this.
Source Validity – Original OEM Print
This manual is a scanned copy of the official Toyota publication. It is not a re-written aftermarket version. The page numbers match the original – 1338 pages. The torque spec table on page 26 is the same one used in the dealership. I know because I used the paper version when I started at the shop in 1995. If you want to see the difference, look at the Automotive Industry Overview for official resources – but this manual is the real thing. Do not trust a third-party reprint that says “generic torque values apply.” Fat chance.
FAQ
- Does this manual include the electrical wiring diagrams for the 1990 Supra?
- Yes. Section D has the full wiring for all MK3 years. The diagrams show connector views and ground locations.
- What torque values are listed in section B (Standard Bolt Torque Specifications)?
- Section B (page 26 of the manual) gives the standard bolt torque in ft-lbs for SAE and metric bolts by diameter and thread pitch. It also lists the tightening angle for bolts that require turn-of-the-nut. The table is the same one Toyota used in the factory – not a generic chart. For example, a 10mm bolt with 1.25mm pitch gets 33 ft-lbs. If you need a specific engine torque, go to the EM or CO sections. The standard table is for bolts that are not called out individually.
You have the 1338 pages of factory data right now. Access the Factory Manual and put it on your tablet. Next time you swap a head gasket on a Supra, you will have the torque sequence and the SST numbers. That is how you keep the job from coming back.
