If you’ve ever spent a Saturday chasing a no-start on a 1991 Celica because the previous owner “fixed” the harness, you know why you need the factory diagram. I’m Mike Callahan. I’ve been under hoods since before some of you were born. The Toyota Celica 1991 Wiring Diagram is not a generic printout. It’s 16 pages of what the engineers drew when they built the car. That matters when you’re probing pins at the ECU.

Wiring Diagram Overview: The Celica 1.6L Layout

This manual covers the 1.6L engine, Figure 3 in the document. You get the entire power distribution from the battery through the EFI main relay, the circuit opening relay, and the ignition switch. The diagram shows every terminal on the J/B #1, #2, and #3 junction blocks, plus the ECU pinout. Wire colors are printed right on the lines. Not a color guesser chart—factory codes like BLK-YEL, BLU-WHT, ORN, PNK. You need a multimeter and a set of test lights. I’d also have a 10-12 gauge wire for jumpers because sometimes you have to bypass a relay to confirm it’s bad.

What Wire Colors Match Which Circuit?

The diagram uses Toyota’s standard color coding. For example, BLK-YEL appears on the EFI main relay coil, the circuit opening relay, and the intake air temp sensor. BLU-WHT runs from the ECU to the check engine light and the speed sensor. If you see a stripe, the second color is the stripe. The 1991 Celica uses a mix of solid and two-tone wires. Do not trust a 1992 diagram for this—the pinouts changed when they went to the 5S-FE. This is 16 pages of pure 1991 specificity.

3 Critical Power Distribution Circuits

First: the EFI main relay. Pin 15A EFI fuse feeds the relay coil. Ground path goes through the ECU on terminal ACT. If that relay doesn’t click, fuel pump and injectors stay dead. Second: the circuit opening relay. It takes power from the IGN fuse and passes it to the fuel pump when the ECU grounds the control wire. Third: the starter signal. The diagram shows the BLK wire from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. Check that wire at the J/B #1 (IGN fuse) position before you replace the starter. Every circuit has a page number but I won’t list them all—you need to see the whole thing in context.

Oxygen Sensor Circuit: California Emissions

The Californication of the 1991 Celica brought an extra oxygen sensor and a fuel gas temp sensor. The diagram shows two OX terminals on the ECU (OX1 and OX2). Wire colors are BLU-WHT and PNK-RED on the sensor side. If you’re swapping a California car to federal, you need to repin the ECU connector. This manual gives you the factory pin locations. I’ve seen guys leave the second O2 sensor dangling and then wonder why the check engine light stays on.

Use This Diagram Without Guessing

Start by identifying your car’s production month if possible—some late-1991 cars had a different J/B layout. Print the 16 pages and lay them out on the bench. Trace each circuit from power source to load. Mark the pins with colored tape. Do not use a test light for ECU signal wires—use a digital multimeter set to 20V DC. The manual does not include torque specs because it’s a wiring document, but for any electrical connector, tighten the bolts to 7 ft-lbs (hand-tight) and avoid overtightening the fuse terminals.

Why OEM Wiring Diagrams Beat Aftermarket Copies

Aftermarket manuals re-draw these diagrams and often simplify them—they omit the partial views of junction blocks or combine wires that are separate in the harness. The factory document shows you exactly where each splice is, what color the splice tape is, and which connector pin it goes to. For example, the fuel injector circuit: four injectors each have a BLK-ORG power feed from the EFI main relay, and each injector gets a ground from a separate ECU injector driver pin. An aftermarket diagram might show one wire going to all four, which is wrong and will lead you to replace the wrong part. This is 16 pages of the real thing.

Does this wiring diagram cover the 1991 Celica GT with the 2.2L engine?
No. This manual is for the 1.6L 4A-FE engine only. The 2.2L 5S-FE uses a different ECU pinout and relay layout.
What should I do if the wire colors on my car do not match the diagram?
First, verify you have the correct model year and engine. Check the vehicle’s build date—some late-1991 production runs had minor harness changes. If colors still mismatch, look for corrosion or previous repairs that swapped a section of harness. The diagram is the factory standard. If you have an unexpected color, it could be a splice from an aftermarket alarm or remote start. Disconnect those and retest. I’ve seen aftermarket immobilizers cut the fuel pump circuit and use different color wires, throwing off the entire diagnostic process.
