I’ve seen it a hundred times. Aftermarket manuals will give you a generic diagram and tell you to “align as necessary.” That’s not a spec. That’s a lawsuit. Body Reference Points: Critical Measurements

Chapter 12 gives you the body reference points – the datum lines and dimension tables that let you square up a bent frame. This is where most DIY guys screw up. They eyeball it and weld in a new section that’s twisted. The reference points on page 53 provide the distance from centerline to each locating hole and the height from the floor. If you don’t have an aligning jig, at least you can measure off these numbers. I’ve used these same reference points to pull a Forester back to within factory spec after a minor collision. They work.

Radiator Panel Replacement: Step-by-Step from the Factory

Chapter 13 walks you through total replacement of the radiator panel – a job that looks simple but requires precise welding to avoid coolant leaks and misaligned headlights. The procedure on page 70 shows the rough cutting lines, then calls out 9 separate weld zones: 6 points (outside · 1), 4 points (outside · 1), 2 points (outside · 1, belt sander), and so on. Each weld point is numbered and referenced to the illustration. The manual tells you which welds are one-side spot, which require a belt sander to clean the mating surface, and the removal direction for each section. That level of detail saves you from having to grind off mis-placed welds and start over.

Fuel Flap Repair: Don’t Skip the Caution

Chapter 11 covers the Fuel Flap – a small but critical piece. The manual starts with a CAUTION about fuel system pressure and electrical connections. Then it gives you the tool list: specific socket sizes and a removal procedure that keeps the hinge undamaged. A lot of aftermarket sources treat this as a plastic clip that pops off. The OEM manual shows you the correct way to disengage the spring mechanism without breaking the mounting tab. That’s the difference between a 15-minute job and a 2-hour parts run.

Why OEM Body Repair Documentation Matters

Aftermarket manuals often skip the anticorrosion wax application (Chapter 9) and undercoat specs (Chapter 10). Those are the steps that keep a Forester from rotting around the wheel wells. The factory manual specifies the wax type, application areas, and thickness. Same for body sealing (Chapter 8) – it lists seam sealer part numbers and application width. If you leave that out, moisture gets into the lap joints and you’ll see rust bubbles in two years. I’ve had to cut out and replace panels that were installed with generic seam sealer that failed. Don’t be that guy.
