You’ve got a Sterling COE in the bay with a blown head gasket and the new guy is guessing at torque values on the head bolts. I’ve seen that end with a warped head and a pissed-off owner. That’s where the Sterling COE 45, COE 50, COE 30 2007 Workshop Manual stops the guessing. This is the OEM factory book – 2515 pages – not some aftermarket rewrite that leaves out half the steps. Engine Overhaul Coverage

GROUP INDEX lists ENGINE under section 11, followed by LUBRICATION (12), FUEL AND ENGINE CONTROL (13A), and COOLING (14). That’s four full groups dedicated to the powerplant. The engine section includes disassembly, inspection, and reassembly with all wear limits – not the generic “tighten until snug” you get from a parts-store manual. Factory procedure calls for specific tightening sequences and angular steps. Page 00-31 has the TABLE OF STANDARD TORQUE VALUES. Use it. Don’t trust a YouTube video that says “just torque it to spec.” That’s how you crack a block.

Fuel System: Common Rail and ECU Programming

This manual covers the COMMON RAIL SYSTEM (13EA) separately from the standard FUEL AND ENGINE CONTROL (13A). If you’re dealing with a high-pressure common rail injection system, you need the factory bleed-down and pressure test steps. Also includes ECU REWRITE AND PROGRAMMING (13ECU) – that’s how you reflash the ECM after a replacement. Aftermarket manuals leave this out because they don’t have the factory security codes. This one has the full procedure. For Manual Transmission work, the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION group (23) gives you shift-point specs and line pressure checks.

Cooling System: Don’t Skip the Burp Procedure

Section 14 – COOLING – covers radiator, fan clutch, and coolant flow diagrams. I’ve seen shops skip the de-aeration step and end up with an air-locked engine that overheats on the test drive. The manual spells out the correct fill and bleed sequence. It also lists coolant capacity in gallons (imperial) and the thermostat opening temperature. If you’re in San Antonio like me, you know heat kills these trucks. Do it right the first time.

Transmission and Driveline Specs

Beyond the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (23), PROPELLER SHAFT (25) gives you U-joint angles and yoke torque. FRONT AXLE (26) and REAR AXLE (27) include differential fill specs and backlash measurements. For Manual Transmission variants, you’ll also need the clutch adjustment data. The manual doesn’t assume you’re using the same transmission – it lists each option with its own torque table. Check the POWER TRAIN TABLE on page 00-3 to match your vehicle.

Brake Systems: Standard and ABS

BRAKE (35A) covers air brake service – pushrod stroke adjustment, chamber sizing, and slack adjuster torque. ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) (35E) gives you diagnostic trouble codes and sensor gap specs. I’ve used this section to trace a short in a wheel speed sensor harness that had the ABS light stuck on. Wiring diagrams in the ELECTRICAL section (54) show pinouts and connector views. No generic Chilton drawing – this is the actual factory schematic.

This is not a reprint or a scan of a copied manual. It’s the official Freightliner LLC publication from 2007, STI-475-08. The GROUP INDEX shows 28 sections covering everything from GENERAL (00) through HEATER AND AIR CONDITIONING (55). Aftermarket manuals often combine multiple model years and leave out details like the PRECAUTIONS FOR ELECTRIC WELDING on page 00-21. That page alone can save you a fried ECU. If you buy a third-party PDF, you’re missing critical safety notes like “disconnect battery before welding” – stuff that’s obvious to some, but not to every tech in the shop.

FAQ

Does this manual include wiring diagrams for the entire cab?

Yes. The ELECTRICAL section (54) covers the full chassis and cab wiring, including connector pinouts, fuse locations, and ground points. If you’re chasing a parasitic draw or a no-start, you’ll find the circuit paths there.

Will this work on a 2006 COE 50?

2006 model year differences are minor – the manual is based on the 2008 model year but covers 2007 builds. Check the VIN range on page 00-11.
