Description
Porsche 924 1982 Workshop Manual – Chassis, Heating, AC

You see aftermarket manuals promising the world, but when you pull a cylinder head on a 924 and the torque spec is off by 5 lb-ft, you’re buying a new head gasket. That’s not a repair; that’s a lesson. This 1982 Porsche 924 1982 Workshop Manual is the actual DR. ING. h. c. F. PORSCHE Aktiengesellschaft publication. 211 pages, no reprints, no third-party approximations. If you’re rebuilding an engine, swapping a transmission, or chasing an AC leak, this is what the factory techs used.
Engine Rebuild: Crankshaft, Pistons, and Cylinder Head
Volume I of this manual (included in the full set) covers the crankshaft assembly and cylinder head work in depth. You get procedures for disassembling and assembling the crankcase and crankshaft, checking bearing play, removing and installing pistons, and replacing valve guides. The cylinder head section alone runs from page 15-1 through 15-19, with specifics on machining valves, adjusting valve play, and installing the drive belt. Tightening torques for the crankcase are listed on page 10-04. Don’t guess – use the factory numbers.
Does This Manual Cover Fuel System and CIS Injection?
Fuel Supply System and Fuel System (CIS) are separate repair groups in the ENGINE section. The manual gives you the removal, installation, and adjustment steps for the mechanical fuel injection. It also includes the exhaust system and emission controls. If you’re chasing a cold-start or idle issue, this is the source. No generic “CIS troubleshooting” – factory steps only.
3 Volumes – What Each One Covers
This specific listing is Volume III: Chassis, Heating, Air Conditioning. But the full set (Volumes I, II, and III) is available. Volume I handles the engine and cylinder head. Volume II covers clutch, manual and automatic transmissions, differential, and torque converter. Volume III gives you front suspension, brakes, steering, body panels, doors, seats, and the HVAC system. For related manuals, check the Porsche 924 Workshop Manual Volume IV Body Electrics, Porsche 924 Volume I Engine Workshop Manual, and Porsche 924 Workshop Manual Volume II Transmission. Each one is OEM-only.
Get the Right Torque Specs – Page 10-04
Page 10-04 in Volume I lists all tightening torques for the engine/crankcase assembly. This includes main bearing cap bolts, connecting rod nuts, and flywheel fasteners. The cylinder head gets its own tightening sequence on page 15-13 for the valve adjusting screw. You won’t find those numbers in a Haynes manual. They are specific to the 924’s 2.0L engine. Ignoring them means warped heads or snapped bolts.
Heating and Air Conditioning: Factory Wiring and Repair
The HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING section (pages 80–89) gives you the blower motor, heater core replacement, and AC compressor service. The wiring diagram for the HVAC controls is in the ELECTRICS section starting page 90. If you are tracing a short or replacing the evaporator, this book has the circuit paths. For an overview of the 924’s place in automotive history, see this Automotive Industry Overview. And if you’re rebuilding the gearbox, read up on Manual Transmission fundamentals – but use the factory specs from the manual for the actual work.
- Does this manual include wiring diagrams for the entire car?
- Yes, wiring is covered from page 97 onward, with separate sections for exterior lights, interior lights, and the radio.
- What torque values are provided for cylinder head bolts?
- The manual lists tightening torques for the crankcase on page 10-04, and the cylinder head seal removal/installation steps include specific bolt tightening sequences on page 15-10. For valve adjusting screw torque, see page 15-13. Always double-check the year stamp (1982) – later models differ. The OEM spec for the 924 cylinder head bolts is part of a multi-step angle-torque procedure; the manual walks you through each stage. If you skip to the final number without the sequence, you’ll crack the casting.
This manual was printed in Germany in 1982. It is not a reprint or a scan of a copy that was copied three times. The pages are crisp, the diagrams are legible, and the specifications are the ones Porsche used on the production line. Whether you are pulling a transmission or adjusting the valve clearances, you need this on the bench next to you. Access the Factory Manual and stop borrowing torque specs from forum posts.
