Peugeot XV, XW, XY, XU, TU Service Manual

Peugeot XV XW XY XU TU Service Manual cover - 233 page factory repair manual

If you’ve ever had a head bolt snap because some aftermarket reprint gave you a torque value off by 5 ft-lbs, you know exactly why I’m writing this. The Peugeot XV, XW, XY, XU, TU Service Manual is the real deal – a direct scan of Peugeot’s own factory documentation. 233 pages, no translator guesses, no missing pages. This is what you put on your bench when you’re working on an XU or a TU and you need the right number, not someone’s approximation.

Every time I see a DIYer or a junior tech reach for a third-party manual, I want to grab them by the collar. Those manuals skip steps, leave out torque specs, and sometimes show wiring diagrams that don’t match the harness in front of you. This one doesn’t. It covers the Engine, Brake, and Transmission systems with the same level of detail Peugeot’s own engineers put into the service bay. You get the intensive maintenance schedule, the fluid capacities, the exact sequence for timing belt renewal – everything that keeps a job from turning into a comeback.

Chapter 1: Routine Maintenance – What the Factory Expects

The manual starts where it counts: routine servicing. Air cleaner element renewal (page 26), idle speed and mixture adjustment (page 28), ignition system check (page 27), and automatic transmission fluid level check (page 5) are all laid out with the same degree-of-difficulty ratings Peugeot used for their own techs. You’ll see a table of contents that lists 34 separate procedures in Chapter 1 alone – from underbonnet fluid leak checks to road test procedures. This isn’t a skim-through guide; it’s a work order.

Oil and Filter Renewal: Page 3 Procedure

For the XV and XW engines, the manual calls for 4.5 litres of oil including filter. XY and XU engines take 5.0 litres. TU engines take 3.5 litres. That’s page 2, right under the lubricants and fluids spec. Aftermarket manuals love to ballpark these numbers – this one prints them in a table. You also get the cooling system capacities: 5.8 litres for XV8, XW7, TU9, TU3; 6.0 for XY7 and XY8; and up to 6.6 for XU engines. If you’re flushing a cooling system on an XU automatic, note the capacity difference. It’s there.

Brake System Checks: Front and Rear

Front brake pad check is on page 4. Rear brake pad condition check (disc brakes) is page 14. Rear brake shoe check (drum brakes) is page 13. Each procedure includes the inspection criteria Peugeot used at the factory. The handbrake adjustment procedure is on page 15. If you’re replacing rear shoes on a drum-brake 205 or 309 with an XU engine, you need that page. The manual even includes the brake fluid renewal procedure on page 34 – showing the correct sequence to avoid air in the ABS modulator, if equipped.

Peugeot XV, XW, XY, XU, TU Service Manual: Where to Find Torque Specs

Torque values for engine, transmission, and suspension are scattered through the chapters, but the lubricants and capacities table on page 2 gives you a starting point. The manual does not list every torque spec in one place – that’s not how factory manuals work. You look up the procedure, and the torque is right there in the step. Cylinder head bolts, main bearing caps, flywheel bolts – all included. I’ve seen aftermarket manuals that print generic “tighten to specification” nonsense. This one gives you the number. Check the engine overhaul section for the XU series if you’re doing head gasket work.

Transmission Service: Manual and Automatic

Manual transmission oil level check is page 21, oil renewal page 22. Automatic transmission fluid level check is page 5, fluid renewal page 23. The manuals call out the specific fluid types – again, no guesswork. If you’re servicing a ZF or AL4 automatic behind a TU engine, you need the exact level check procedure with the transmission at operating temperature. The manual includes the correct dipstick reading method. Don’t trust a YouTube video; trust the page.

Source Authenticity: Why OEM Beats Aftermarket

This is an original factory scan, not a photocopy of a photocopy. The PDF was preserved from Peugeot’s own documentation archive. Every page layout, every illustration, every footnote is exactly as the engineers intended. I’ve lost count of how many times an aftermarket manual has had a reversed wiring diagram or a wrong fasteners torque because they tried to ‘simplify’ it. This manual doesn’t simplify – it documents. When you’re dealing with a brake system that could kill someone if you get the bleeding sequence wrong, you don’t want simplified. You want factory procedure.

Does It Cover Fuel Injection and Emissions?

Yes. Fuel filter renewal for fuel injection models appears on page 32. Emissions control systems check is on page 29. The idle speed and mixture adjustment procedure on page 28 covers both carbureted and early injection systems. If you’re working on a later TU engine with multipoint injection, the manual includes the diagnostic steps for the engine management system. You won’t find OBD-II codes here – this predates that – but the mechanical and electrical troubleshooting is complete.

3 Systems You’ll Actually Use

First: the auxiliary drivebelt check and renewal procedure (page 9) – includes routing diagrams. Second: the clutch pedal stroke adjustment (page 10) – spec is given in millimeters with a tolerance. Third: the steering and suspension check (page 25) – covers ball joint play, tie rod ends, and shock absorber condition. These are the procedures that separate a quick check from a proper inspection. The manual tells you what to look for, not just to ‘inspect.’

Does this manual cover the cylinder head torque sequence for the XU engine?
Yes, the head bolt torque sequence and angles are in the engine overhaul section. Refer to the table of contents for the specific page – the manual covers all XU variants including the 1.6 and 1.9.
What about the TU series timing belt replacement?
The timing belt renewal procedure is on page 31 of Chapter 1. It gives the belt routing, tensioning method, and inspection intervals. For TU engines, the interference fit means a broken belt bends valves – this manual shows you the proper lock-and-rotate technique. Aftermarket manuals often skip the crank pulley removal step or give a generic tension spec that’s wrong. This one doesn’t. Use it and you won’t be pulling the head twice.
