If you’ve ever burned a Saturday on a Perkins 6.354 because some aftermarket reprint had the wrong rod bolt torque, you know my pain. I’ve seen bolts stretched, liners shifted, and head gaskets weeping – all traced back to a manual that guessed the numbers. This Perkins 6.372, 6.354, T6.354, 6.3542 1981 Workshop Manual is the real thing: 163 pages of factory data for these four diesel engine models. Every spec in this book was used to build and test the engines on the line. Torque values, wear limits, injection timing – all verified by the engineers who designed the block. For a professional or a serious DIYer, that difference is the line between a job that seals and one that leaks.

Technical Data Section B – What You Get

Section B compresses everything you need to check before you turn a wrench: cylinder bore diameters, crankshaft journal tolerances, valve clearances, and oil pressure specs. Page 73? That’s where you find the charge pressure for the 6.3542. But don’t skip the earlier pages – the data on piston protrusion and liner stand-out is printed exactly as it left the factory. You measure, you compare, you know whether to reject a part or run it.

These numbers aren’t suggestions. I’ve had a 6.372 come into the shop with a knock because someone used a generic torque for the main bearing cap bolts. The manual calls for a specific sequence and angle-tighten step on page 88. Miss that and you’re buying a crankshaft.

Cylinder Head and Bottom End: Full Rebuild Procedures

Sections E and F walk through the cylinder head, pistons, and connecting rods. The head gasket surface must be flat within 0.003 inch across the length – the manual gives the limit. Valve seat width, spring free length, piston ring end gaps: all laid out in tables. For the T6.354 turbo model, the piston cooling jets get their own check. If you’re rebuilding a 6.3542 or 6.372, the connecting rod bolt stretch requirements are spelled out. You’ll need a torque angle gauge – the manual tells you which one (see Approved Service Tools appendix).

Down in the bottom end, Sections G and H cover the cylinder block, liners, crankshaft, and main bearings. Liner fit in the block requires a specific interference – measure with a dial bore gauge. The crankshaft thrust clearance is 0.004 to 0.009 inch. Page numbers for those values? Section H, right after the dimension tables. Use them.

Cooling System L: Factory Flow Rates

The cooling system in these Perkins engines is no joke. Section L shows the thermostat opening temperature (82°C), the water pump flow rate, and the correct routing for bypass hoses. Overheat a 6.354 and you crack the head – I’ve seen it. The manual includes the torque sequence for the water pump housing bolts and the belt tension adjustment procedure. For the 6.372, the system capacity is 14.4 quarts (13.6 liters) with the radiator. Don’t guess coolant type – the Fuel and Lubricating Oil Specifications appendix lists approved antifreeze grades.

Fuel System M: Injection Timing

Injector pump timing on these engines is not a “get it close” operation. Section M covers the CAV and Simms pumps used across the 6.354 series. The static timing procedure requires a dial indicator on the plunger lift – the manual gives the lift dimension to 0.001 inch. For the T6.354 turbo, the boost compensator adjustment is also included. If you’re chasing a misfire or low power, the Fault Diagnosis section D lists common injection problems and the proper diagnostic steps. Fuel filter change intervals are in the Operating and Maintenance section C: every 250 hours, no exceptions.

Source Validity – Why 1981 OEM Documentation Beats Aftermarket

I’ve worked with aftermarket manuals that claim to cover these engines. They skip the turbocharger section (P in this manual) or compress the 163 pages into half the content. The Perkins original includes the full turbcharger overhaul – step-by-step, with bearing clearance specs and balancing instructions. Section Q for alternator, dynamo, and starter motor gives winding resistance values you won’t find in any reprint. Compressor R and Exhauster S round out the auxiliary drives. This manual was printed in 1981 and updated with Amendment Page Set number 1 in 1988 – the copy on this site is the complete version, not a cut-down PDF.

Can I use this for a 6.372 agricultural engine?
Absolutely – the 6.372 is included, with all the same technical data sections. The only difference is cylinder bore and stroke, which are listed in Section B. If your engine has a front-mounted PTO, check the manual for flywheel housing variations (Section N). Make sure you have the serial number prefix to confirm – the manual includes stamping locations on page 15. If you’re adapting this engine into a vehicle with a Manual Transmission, the manual doesn’t cover the gearbox swap, but clutch housing dimensions are given. For Manual Transmission overhaul, you’ll need a separate service book.
