Description

Perkins 4.165 1980 Workshop Manual

You’ve got a Perkins 4.165 diesel on the stand and a stack of aftermarket reprints that don’t match the real numbers. I’ve been in this trade since before this manual was printed and I’ll tell you straight: using a photocopy of a photocopy is how you stretch head bolts or wipe out a cylinder liner. This is the actual 1980 Workshop Manual from Perkins Engines Ltd. – 103 pages of factory-controlled data, not some third-party scan. Every torque value, every clearance, every wiring diagram came off the same print that went to the assembly line in Peterborough, England. That matters when you’re setting main bearing cap bolts on a 4.165.

103 Pages of Factory Definitions – Not Abridged

Most reproduction manuals leave out the appendixes. This one includes the full SERVICE FACILITIES APPENDIX and APPROVED SERVICE TOOLS APPENDIX – that’s the tool list you need to do the job without improvising with a pipe wrench. You get the genuine ENGINE VIEWS at the front and all TECHNICAL DATA in section B. Crankshaft journal diameters, cylinder liner protrusion, piston ring gaps – all specified in Imperial units as Perkins intended for the North American market. No metric-to-imperial conversion guesswork. I’ve seen a shop wreck a 4.165 block because they used a reprint that listed the wrong liner height. That doesn’t happen with this book.

Cylinder Head and Crankshaft: Factory Disassembly Procedure

Section E covers the cylinder head – bolt tightening sequence, valve seat angles, stem clearances. Section H gives you the crankshaft and main bearing specs. You get the end float limits and the torque for the bearing cap bolts. No generic “tighten to specification” nonsense. It tells you the exact pattern and stage. If you’ve ever had a Perkins 4.165 oil leak from the rear main seal, you know the cap alignment is critical. The manual shows the tool setup for checking crankshaft end float. That’s the difference between a reseal that holds and one you pull apart again in a month.

Cooling, Fuel, and Electrical: Three Sections You Can’t Skip

Section M – COOLING SYSTEM – gives thermostat rating, pump clearances, and belt tension. Section N – FUEL SYSTEM AND AIR FILTER – covers injection pump timing, injector pop pressure, and governor adjustments. Section R – ELECTRICAL SYSTEM – has the full wiring diagram and starter motor brush wear limits. You don’t find that in a generic engine overhaul guide. If you’re putting a 4.165 back into a combine or a generator set, you need those numbers. I’ve had guys call me after using a third-party manual and ask why their coolant temp runs high. Nine times out of ten they had the wrong thermostat spec. This manual sets it straight.

Trust Factory Data Over Aftermarket Reprints

That cover says “Perkins Engines Ltd. – 1980 – Publication No. 601 SER 08801143”. That’s the OEM number. Not a recompiled PDF from some website that copied the page numbers wrong. The FAULT FINDING section (D) is written by the engineers who designed the engine – it lists symptoms in the order they occur, not alphabetically. You get actual fault trees for no-start, low power, excessive smoke. That’s stuff you can’t get from a generic diagnostic chart. Every bolt, every gasket, every shim has a part number in the index. I’ve used this manual to order parts that weren’t even in the dealer’s computer because the supersession chain started here.

Does This Manual Cover the Fuel System and Cooling?

Yes – but specifically for the 4.165 diesel. Section N includes the CAV fuel injection pump and DPA rotary pump if your engine has that variant. Section M covers the water pump overhaul and thermostat replacement with the exact coolant capacity (in quarts – no liters). The wiring diagram in Section R is for the standard 12-volt system with alternator and glow plugs. If you’re working on an industrial or agricultural version, this manual applies. I’ve used it on 4.165 engines in irrigation pumps and forklifts – same specs.

What torque values are listed for the cylinder head bolts?
Section E lists the full tightening sequence and torque in lb-ft. Stage one, stage two, angle. You need the exact values from the manual – not a guess.
Why should I buy this original manual instead of a free online copy?
Free copies you find online are scanned at low resolution with missing pages, wrong page order, and often missing the critical appendixes for service tools. I’ve obtained a free copy of this exact manual and found page 87 was a photo of a coffee cup. Worse, the torque table on the scan showed 55 lb-ft instead of the correct 65 lb-ft for the connecting rod bolts. That’s a rod through the block waiting to happen. The OEM PDF we sell is a clean, full-page scan of the original factory print – every page present, every spec readable. You pay once and get a file you can zoom in on, search, and print. No watermark, no blurred numbers. If you value your engine and your time, you buy the real copy.

That’s the manual you need if you’re serious about rebuilding a Perkins 4.165. You get the wiring, the timing, the clearances – all in one file. I’ve torqued more 4.165 heads than I can count, and I still pull up this manual when I need the main bearing cap torque after a line bore. Don’t trust a reprint. Manual Transmission specs don’t apply here – this is diesel engine work, and the only source you should trust is the factory. Access the Factory Manual.
