Description

Perkins 4.108, 4.107, 4.99 1983 Workshop Manual

I’ve seen a lot of aftermarket manuals that look like someone photocopied a photocopy and printed it on cheap paper. That’s not what you get here. This 1983 Perkins 4.108, 4.107, 4.99 Workshop Manual is the original OEM document – 114 pages printed by Perkins Engines Limited in Peterborough, England. Page 1 tells you the publication number (601 SER 0383 1072) and that it supersedes the previous edition. If you’re working on a 4.108, 4.107, or 4.99 diesel engine, this is the only reference you need for cylinder head torque, crankshaft clearances, fuel system timing, cooling system specs, and electrical troubleshooting. Period.

You get 114 pages.

Perkins 4.108, 4.107, 4.99 Workshop Manual – 114 Pages of Factory Data

The table of contents lists 18 sections from A through R. Section A covers engine views – you get front, side, and cross-sectional drawings of the engine block, cylinder head, and associated components. Section B is the technical data chapter: all the critical numbers for your rebuild – bore, stroke, firing order, valve clearances, oil pressures, and torque values. You’ll find the exact torque for the main bearing cap bolts and the cylinder head tightening sequence. Don’t rely on a generic chart.

Torque Values in Section B – Don’t Skip This

Too many guys pull a torque value from a forum and then wonder why the head gasket leaks. Section B has the factory specs. The foreword on page 3 even mentions that joint renewal and cleaning faces are assumed – that’s basic workshop practice that Perkins expects you to know. This manual is written for professionals, but anyone with a decent set of tools can follow it. Use a calibrated torque wrench and follow the sequences given.

What About the Fuel System?

Section N covers air cleaners and fuel system. If you need injection pump timing data or fuel lift pump specifications, it’s in there. The manual includes a fault diagnosis section (Section D) that helps you isolate problems without replacing parts. For marine installations, Section R covers engines for refrigeration units – that includes specific cooling and fuel system adjustments. Check Perkins 4.108 4.107 4.99 Marine Engines Workshop Manual for additional marine-specific data if needed.

7 Systems Covered in the Repair Manual

From cylinder head (Section E) to pistons and connecting rods (F), cylinder block and liners (G), crankshaft and main bearings (H), timing case and drive (J), timing (K), lubrication (L), cooling (M), fuel (N), flywheel (P), and electrical (Q) – that’s 11 sections, not 7, but the point is the manual covers every major system of the Perkins 4.108, 4.107, and 4.99. This is not a condensed version. Each section includes exploded diagrams and step-by-step procedures. The electrical section (Q) includes starter, alternator, and general wiring.

Cooling System: Factory Procedure for Overheating

Section M has the cooling system data – thermostat opening temperature, water pump specs, and coolant capacity. If you’re overheating and you’ve already checked the thermostat, the manual tells you how to inspect the water pump impeller and check for blockages. Follow the procedure exactly. Perkins designed these engines to run at specific temperatures. Drift outside those numbers and you’ll crack a cylinder head.

Crankshaft and Main Bearing Checks – Factory Tolerances

Section H is for crankshaft and main bearings. You’ll find the journal diameters, oil clearance limits, and end float specifications. Use a micrometer, not a feeler gauge, for journal wear. The manual also lists the approved service tools – you don’t need all of them, but the special puller for the timing gear makes the job go faster. Perkins 4.108 4.107 4.99 Diesel Engine Workshop Manual is the same document but if you need a different binding, that’s available too.

Is this manual for the 4.108 only?
No, it covers 4.108, 4.107, and 4.99.
Can I use this for a marine engine?
Yes, Section R is specifically for engines used in refrigeration units and marine applications. The manual includes specific data for those configurations, but always verify local regulations as stated on page 1.
What torque values are included?
The manual lists torque values for cylinder head bolts, main bearing cap bolts, connecting rod bolts, flywheel bolts, and many others in Section B. These are factory specs from Perkins in 1983. Do not use aftermarket conversion charts – they often differ. The manual also includes tightening sequences and angles where applicable. For example, the cylinder head tightening procedure in Section E references the torque table on page [DATA NEEDED] – I’ve seen techs strip threads by using generic values.
Does the manual include electrical diagrams?
Yes, Section Q covers electrical equipment, including starter motor, alternator, and wiring diagrams for the 4.108, 4.107, and 4.99. However, these are simplified factory schematics, not full vehicle wiring.

You don’t need to guess when you have the factory manual on your bench. Whether you’re checking crankshaft end float or setting valve clearances, the data is right there. Perkins 3.152, 4.236, 4.108, 4.203, 6.3544 1997 Technical Manual – OEM Specs is a related manual if you work on other Perkins models. For basic transmission knowledge, see Manual Transmission and Manual Transmission. But for the 4.108, 4.107, and 4.99, this is the one. Access the Factory Manual and get back to work.
