Section Codes: S, T, W, and EW – What They Mean

The manual uses a coded section system. Every page header has a prefix like T 1-2-3. S stands for Safety rules – read those first. T is the technical section with performance tests and fault diagnosis. W is for excavator repair instructions, and EW is for engine repair. You’ll spend most of your time in T and EW. Page numbers are grouped by section, so don’t expect consecutive pagination.

Units are in the International System (MPa, kgf/cm²) with conversion tables in the intro. For those of us in North America, you’ll need to convert to psi or lb-ft. The conversion factor for pressure: 1 MPa ≈ 145 psi. I’d write that in the margin before you start.

Safety warnings are everywhere – they put a warning symbol next to heavy component weights. Lifting a cylinder head without proper slings? The manual calls it out. Follow that.

Torque Specs and Fluid Capacities

Every bolt in these engines has a factory number. The manual doesn’t give generic values – it lists specific torque for head bolts, main bearing caps, connecting rods, injection pump hardware. You’ll find them in the technical section. If you’re rebuilding a 667TA-EEC, you need those numbers. Aftermarket manuals often round up or skip fasteners. Not this one.

Fluid capacities? In there. But this is a repair manual, not an owner’s handbook. It assumes you already know the machine it’s bolted into. For transmission-related work on the vehicle itself, you’ll want the Manual Transmission service data from the parent machine’s manual. If your engine is older, cross-check with updated service bulletins, but the core numbers haven’t changed.

For the 667TA-EBF and 667TA-EED, the injection timing procedure is identical to the others. The manual integrates these variants into one book, so you won’t need three different PDFs.

Tools You Need Before Starting

The manual lists special tools: cylinder liner puller, valve spring compressor, injector pressure tester. Standard shop tools: torque wrench (click-type or beam), micrometer, dial indicator. If you don’t have a good inch-pound torque wrench for the smaller fasteners, get one before you open this PDF. Using a foot-pound wrench on a 10 mm bolt will strip it.

Workbench tip: clean all mating surfaces with a razor blade and brake cleaner before assembly. The manual doesn’t say that, but I do. Follow the sequence for head bolt tightening – it’s multi-step: 30 N·m, then 60 N·m, then 90°, then 90°. That’s page 26 of the technical section. Write the degrees in marker on the block.

Does the Manual Cover the Fuel System?

Yes. The injection pump, injectors, and high-pressure lines are in the T section. The manual includes performance test procedures for pump delivery and injector opening pressure. If you’re troubleshooting a no-start on a 667TA-EBD, start with the fuel system diagnostics: check lift pump pressure, injection timing, and injector spray pattern. All factory pass/fail criteria are given.

Why OEM Documentation Beats Aftermarket

Aftermarket manuals combine multiple engines into one generic book. They leave out the little details – like which sealant to use on the timing cover, or the exact sequence for tightening the oil pan bolts. This New Holland manual has those details because the engineers who designed the engine wrote the procedures. The illustrations are from the actual parts catalog. The torque values are tested. If you’re paying for a repair, you want the same data the dealer charges $150/hour to use.
