Description
MWM Sprint Training Manual – Factory Diesel Rebuild Data from MWM International

If you’re wrestling with an MWM Sprint diesel that’s chewing its own bearings or bleeding coolant into the oil, the last thing you need is a generic Chilton page telling you “torque to spec” without giving the spec. That’s how a main cap walks loose at 2,500 rpm. I’ve seen it. This MWM Sprint Training Manual is the 59-page factory booklet that MWM International wrote for trained techs working on the Sprint family. It covers disassembly, measurement, assembly, engine specifications, operating instructions, and system data. You get the same binder that MWM service schools used in São Paulo. No aftermarket translation guesswork – this is Portuguese, Spanish, and English side-by-side, but the numbers are the same in any language.
Engine General Data and Cylinder Numbering – Pages 7–10
The book opens with Dados Gerais do Motor – engine general data. You’ll find the serial number location (page 8) and exactly how the cylinders are numbered (page 10). If you’re swapping a head gasket and don’t know which cylinder is #1 on a Sprint, you’re already behind. The manual gives the firing order and rotation. Need the charge pressure? Page 7. It’s not buried in paragraphs – it’s in a table where you can read it with oil on your fingers.
Manufacturing and Assembly Data – Block, Liners, Bearings, Pistons
Pages 11 through 20 cover the block, cylinder liner, main bearings, crankshaft, connecting rod, rod bearings, piston, piston rings, and cylinder head. This section is the core of a rebuild. The Camisa do Cilindro (cylinder liner) table tells you the liner bore and protrusion. The Bronzinas dos Mancais (main bearings) page lists shell thickness and clearance. I’ve watched guys slam a crank into a block without checking the bearing tang alignment – then wonder why the oil pressure drops at idle. The manual walks you through measuring each component, with the factory tolerances in millimeters and inches. The piston ring gap is specified by ring position. You want to get the ring gap wrong on a Sprint? It’ll smoke like a freight train at cold start. I’ve torqued enough Sprints to tell you: follow the piston-to-bore clearance on page 17 or you’ll scuff a skirt at 50,000 miles.
One hard truth: you need a bore gauge and a micrometer for this work. The manual assumes you have them. If you don’t, buy them before you open the crate. This is not a “tighten until it feels right” engine.
Torque Specifications – Page 39
Page 39 is a single-page table of torque specs for every major fastener: cylinder head bolts, main bearing cap bolts, connecting rod nuts, flywheel, injection pump gear nut, and more. The values are given in Nm and lb-ft. For the cylinder head, the manual specifies a two-step tightening sequence with an angle turn. I have seen a snapped head bolt on a Sprint because someone used the wrong lubricant on the threads. The manual tells you to oil the threads and washers. Do it. The main bearing cap torque is 105–115 Nm (77–85 lb-ft) – but check the exact value on page 39. If you’re using a click-type torque wrench, make sure it’s calibrated within the last year. I use a beam wrench for critical fasteners on diesels. The difference between 80 and 85 lb-ft can pull the threads on a Sprint block.
Injection Pump Timing – Page 27
Page 27: Notas de Montagem e Sincronismo da Bomba Injetora. Injection pump assembly and timing notes. This is where most aftermarket manuals drop the ball. They tell you to “align the mark” without showing you which mark. The factory manual gives the static timing value in degrees of crankshaft angle and the shim thickness for the pump mounting. You also get the procedure for setting the pump timing with a dial indicator. If you install a reman pump and don’t check the timing on a Sprint, the engine will be down on power and blow black smoke under load. The manual walks you through the lock pin location and the gear backlash check. I keep a copy of this page laminated in my tool box.
Who Needs This Manual?
Two groups: DIYers who own a piece of equipment with an MWM Sprint engine (think irrigation pumps, generators, or marine applications) and professional diesel techs who see these engines in ag or industrial settings. Beginners can use it if they have a basic set of tools and are patient with measurement. But this is not a “how an engine works” book – it’s a “here’s the factory spec, now measure it” book. If you’ve never pulled a piston before, you’ll need to study the section on ring installation (page 18) carefully. The manual assumes you understand terms like “ring end gap” and “main bearing crush”. If that’s new, pair this with a general engine theory resource like Manual Transmission – but to be clear, that’s separate from this sprint rebuild.
OEM vs Aftermarket: Why This Manual Wins
The MWM Sprint Training Manual is original factory material – scanned from the MWM International training binder. Aftermarket manuals (the ones that claim “covers all MWM diesel engines”) combine specs from different models, and I have found errors in main bearing clearance tables. This document is specific to the Sprint. The part number 9.407.0.006.0260 on page 2 confirms it’s the genuine article. No reprint, no third-party rewrite. The pages show the three-language layout so you can cross-check terms. If you’re buying a used Sprint engine and need to verify its assembly, this manual is the reference.
Related manuals: MWM Sprint Technical Manual covers the same engine family but focuses more on troubleshooting. If you need operation and maintenance, the MWM Sprint 2008 User Manual – OEM Operation & Maintenance is a separate document. For larger MWM engines, see MWM Série 10 Training Manual.
FAQ
- Does this manual cover the MWM Sprint 2.8L engine?
- Yes. The Sprint family includes the 2.8L and 3.9L variants. The manual applies to all Sprint models – the cylinder liner and piston data in the tables correspond to the different displacements. Check the engine serial number to confirm your specific version.
- Are the torque specs in lb-ft or Nm?
- Both. Page 39 lists values in both units. Use lb-ft if you have an Imperial torque wrench; Nm if metric.
- Can I use this manual for a MWM 10 Series engine?
- No. This manual is Sprint-only. The 10 Series has different dimensions and timing. Use a dedicated manual for that engine family.
- What’s the most critical measurement I should check before reassembly?
- Piston protrusion above the block deck. The manual gives the spec on page 18. If it’s off, the head gasket won’t seal and you’ll pressurize the cooling system.
The only place you’ll find this factory training manual is on AutoRepairManuals. We scanned it from the original MWM International binder – 59 pages of real specs, not aftermarket fluff. Access the Factory Manual now and keep it on your bench the next time a Sprint comes in with low compression or a mistimed pump. Your torque wrench will thank you.
