Guessing on a tiller with a chain case that has six different drive paths gets expensive fast. I have seen guys pull a transmission out of a 450 Series, lose the detent shaft alignment, and spend half a day chasing a neutral that would not hold. That is billable time you do not get back. Chain Case Operation: Drive Paths and Shaft Alignment

Chapter 5 is where this manual earns its keep. It breaks down the chain case operation into six distinct drive paths: Wheels Reverse, Neutral, Wheels Forward, Counter Rotation Tilling, Standard Rotation Tilling. Each path has its own gear engagement sequence. The manual walks you through Chain Case Separation, then gives you the assembly order for the Wheel Axle and wheel speed reduction shaft, Tine Shaft, Main Shaft Assembly, Counter shaft, Detent shaft, Input shaft, and Shift arm. If you skip the Final Assembly Notes on page 43, you risk binding the counter shaft bearings. I have seen it happen.
