Mazda FS5A-EL 2005 Workshop Manual – Factory Transaxle Specs You Can Trust

2005 Mazda FS5A-EL Automatic Transaxle Workshop Manual cover showing transaxle cutaway

You’re staring at a transaxle spread across the bench, and the aftermarket manual you bought online says “tighten until snug.” Snug doesn’t tighten a bolt to 33 ft-lb. Snug doesn’t tell you the clutch clearance for the forward clutch pack. If you’re working on a Mazda FS5A-EL 2005 Workshop Manual job, you need the actual sheet from Hiroshima. Not a paraphrase. Not a photocopy of a photocopy. This is the 192-page OEM manual printed in June 2005, part number 9999–95–FS5A–06. I’ve used it. It works.

Automatic Transaxle Specifications: What You Get on Page 05-17-2

Page 05-17-2 lists the transaxle specifications – fluid capacity, shift timing, line pressure ranges. When a customer brings in a 2005 Mazda with a slipping third gear, I go straight to that page to cross-check the line pressure against the spec. You don’t guess line pressure. You measure it cold, hot, with a gauge. That page gives you the numbers. Not “check pressure” – the actual psi at idle and stall. If you don’t have those numbers, you’re throwing parts at the car. This manual ends that crap.

Torque Converter: Outline and Structure on Page 05-17-8

The torque converter section starts on page 05-17-8. It covers the outline, structure, and power flow. It explains how the stator and turbine interact. When you’re rebuilding the converter or diagnosing a shudder, you need the factory description of lock-up operation. This manual gives you the cross-sectional view and the power flow outline. Aftermarket diagrams skip the small details – like the exact spring count in the damper assembly. This manual doesn’t. Automotive Industry Overview

Power Flow and Clutch Operation: Page 05-17-26 and Beyond

Pages 05-17-26 through 05-17-30 describe every clutch and brake: forward clutch, 3-4 clutch, reverse clutch, direct clutch, low and reverse brake, reduction brake, and the centrifugal balance clutch. Each component has its own outline, structure, and operation. Need to know how the 2-4 brake band applies? Page 05-17-30. The manual walks through the hydraulic circuits. Not a generic “apply pressure” – the exact port flow and check-ball locations. If you’re assembling the valve body without this, you will get cross-leaks and burnt clutches. Period.

That’s the difference between a five-hour job and a two-day redo. The manual also includes the one-way clutch No.1 outline. I’ve seen techs install that clutch backward because they relied on memory. This manual prevents that. Mazda Z5 1994 Workshop Manual – OEM Factory Specs

Source Validity: OEM Factory Manual vs. Aftermarket Reprints

This is a scanned original from Mazda Motor Corporation. Published June 2005, printed in the USA. Form number 1859–1U–05F. There is no third-party editing. No redrawn diagrams with missing dimensions. The torque converter cross-section on page 05-17-9 is photo-quality PDF, not a retouched blur. I’ve seen aftermarket manuals call the FS5A-EL a “4-speed” – it’s a 5-speed. That kind of error costs you a rebuild kit order. Stick with the factory doc. Audience Fit: Who Needs This 192-Page Transaxle Manual

If you’re a home garage guy pulling a transaxle out of a 2005 Mazda 6 or Tribute, you need this. The manual assumes you have a transmission jack, a torque wrench that clicks at inch-pounds as well as foot-pounds, and a dial indicator for clutch pack clearance. It does not assume you’re a master tech. It does assume you can read a spec sheet and follow a sequence. The service sections (05-17) cover disassembly, inspection, and reassembly in order. No skipping steps. If you skip the centrifugal balance clutch operation check on page 05-17-29, you’ll get a vibration complaint. I’ve seen it happen. Don’t be that guy.

7 Systems Covered in the SERVICE Section

The SERVICE section is broken into subsections: 00-00 (General Information), 05-17 (Automatic Transaxle), 05-50 (Control Valve Body), 05-60 (Electronic Controls). Each subsection has its own page range. The manual covers the EC-AT operation chart, power flow, and component descriptions. It’s not a general repair manual – it’s transaxle-specific. You won’t find engine timing or brake replacement here. What you will find is everything needed to rebuild or replace the FS5A-EL. Mazda SKYACTIV-G 2.0 2011 Workshop Manual – Factory OEM Specs

Does this manual include torque converter removal procedures?
Yes. Pages 05-17-8 through 05-17-10 cover removal, inspection, and installation of the torque converter. The manual specifies the required puller tool and the maximum end-play tolerance.
What tools are required for the clutch clearance measurement?
You need a dial indicator with a magnetic base, a feeler gauge set, and a spring scale. The manual tells you the clearance range for each clutch pack – for example, the 3-4 clutch clearance is 0.6–1.0 mm (0.024–0.039 in). Torque the retaining bolts to 7.9–10.7 ft-lb (10.7–14.5 Nm). Skip that and you get burnt plates. Automotive Industry Overview

Every transaxle job starts with the right information. The Mazda FS5A-EL 2005 Workshop Manual gives you that information straight from the source. No interpretations. No missing pages. 192 pages of factory-sanctioned procedures, torque specs, and diagnostics. When you need to get the job done once and done right, access the factory manual.
