Description
Mack T310 2003 Service Manual – Maxitorque ES Transmission

Worked on a lot of heavy-duty transmissions in my time. The T310 Maxitorque ES is a solid box when you know what you’re doing, but it’ll punish you if you skip the book. This is the factory service manual – not a third-party rewrite, not a scan of a scan. 205 pages, published by Mack Trucks in April 2003. That means every spec in here came from the engineers who built the thing. You want the real numbers? They’re on the page. No guesswork.
Transmission Disassembly and Reassembly
First thing you’ll notice when you open this manual is the sequence. Mack didn’t write this for someone who already knows the job; they wrote it for a tech who needs to get it right the first time. The disassembly chapter walks you through pulling the main case, removing the shift bar housing, and getting the output shaft out without damaging the bearings. Need the end-play spec on the countershaft? Page 73. It’s written in black and white, plus or minus a thousandth. Don’t trust your feel – use the spec.
Main Shaft and Countershaft Bearing Preload
Bearing preload on a T310 is critical. Too loose and you get gear noise and premature wear. Too tight and you’ll cook a bearing before the first oil change. The manual gives a precise shim selection procedure using a dial indicator and a press. No shortcuts. You measure the stack height, pick the shim from the table, and verify. I’ve seen guys try to “feel” the preload and end up rebuilding the same box twice. Use the book.
Shift Control Valve – Air System Diagnostics
The Maxitorque ES uses a pneumatic shift control valve. When the transmission won’t engage a gear, most people start swapping solenoids. The manual has a full diagnostic flowchart starting with air pressure at the valve cover. If you don’t have a regulated air supply at the right PSI, you’re wasting time. This section includes the valve body rebuild procedure with spring lengths and seat inspection. Check the O-ring part numbers – they’re listed by Mack P/N.
Does This Manual Cover the Full Transmission Rebuild?
Yes – from removing the PTO cover to final air test. The book includes all subassemblies: input shaft, main shaft, countershaft, rear bearing cover, shift bar housing, and the clutch housing. Each chapter has a required tool list. For the main shaft bearing puller, Mack calls out tool J-35731 or equivalent. Don’t try to use a generic puller without the adapter – you’ll crack the bearing cage. I know because I’ve had to fix that mistake for other shops.
Torque Specs and Fluid Capacities – Why OEM Matters
Aftermarket manuals often genericize torque values. “Tighten to spec” – what spec? The factory manual lists every bolt torque in ft-lb, including the clutch housing bolts (85 ft-lb) and shift bar housing bolts (18 ft-lb). Fluid capacity for the T310 is 12 quarts of Mack-approved 50W engine oil (not gear oil – read the note on page 137). You use the wrong fluid, you void the warranty and drop a syncro. The manual also includes a lubrication chart with temperature ranges.
Source Authenticity: Factory OEM vs. Aftermarket Reprints
I’ve got a box of aftermarket “equivalent” manuals under my bench that I use for shims. The Mack T310 2003 Service Manual is the real deal – original April 2003 print from Mack Trucks, Inc., part number 10-126. The PDF is a full scan of the physical manual, including the feedback form in front that Mack used to ask techs if they found errors. That’s the attention to detail you get with OEM documentation. If you’re rebuilding a Maxitorque ES, you need these factory specs. The aftermarket stuff will get you close, but “close” on a 1,500-lb transmission means a second rebuild.
