Description
Komatsu WA470-7 Workshop Manual

I have had guys bring me aftermarket PDFs that claim to cover a Komatsu WA470-7 Workshop Manual and then wonder why their torque converter relief valve leaked after they followed some generic number. That stops here. This is the actual factory book – 2348 pages of what Komatsu wrote for their own technicians. If you are swapping a fuel system component or tracing an electrical gremlin, you need the real spec, not a guess.
Foreword, Safety and General Information
Page 00-18 starts with an important safety notice that covers handling fuel system devices and electrical equipment. It tells you how to read the electric wire code and gives the standard tightening torque table. That table alone saves you from snapping bolts in the axle mount or center hinge pin. The manual explains terms for maintenance standard – no assumption about what “snug” means. It is all foot-pounds and inch-pounds.
Specification – Fuel, Coolant, and Lubricants
Section 01 lists the weight table and exactly what fluids go in. If you overfill the hydraulic tank or use the wrong engine oil for the EGR cooler, you cost yourself a rebuild. The table of fuel, coolant, and lubricants is on page 01-3. That is the page I dog-ear before I even look at a component. Also includes the specification drawing for reference when ordering parts.
Structure and Function – 10 Systems Broken Down
This is the meat. You get engine and cooling system including KVGT, EGR system circuit diagram, KCCV ventilator, KDPF, cooling fan motor. Power train section covers the transmission control valve, forward and reverse clutch ECMV, lockup clutch ECMV, and the main relief valve. Steering system, brake system with slack adjuster and accumulator, hydraulic system with CLSS and control valve, work equipment linkage, cab and ROPS. The electrical system chapter alone covers engine control, preheating, parking brake control, machine monitor, rear view monitor, and KOMTRAX. If you need to trace a short in the transmission controller system or test a sensor, the wiring code and system component parts are all here.
Standard Value Tables – Stop Guessing
Section 20 gives you standard service value tables for engine, machine, and electrical system. For instance, the compression pressure specs and blowby pressure limits. Without these, you are comparing your readings to some forum post from 2012. The table for fuel pressure is there – test against the book, not your memory.
Testing and Adjusting – Step-by-Step Factory Procedure
This section starts with a list of tools needed and sketches of those tools. Then it walks through testing engine speed, boost pressure, valve clearance, compression, blowby, oil pressure, EGR valve and KVGT oil pressures, fuel pressure, fuel return rate and leakage. Bleeding air from the fuel system procedure is on page 30-12. There is also handling of cylinder cutout mode and no injection cranking. The manual covers testing KDPF and muffler stack for looseness. You get real steps, not a paragraph that says “seal the connection”.
I have been torquing head bolts since before some of you were born. I trust an OEM manual because I have seen what happens when a tech uses an aftermarket spec and the head gasket fails at 500 hours. This manual is printed from the original Komatsu file. It covers serial numbers 10001 and up. The Manual Transmission section (page 10-45 in the powertrain chapter) goes into the torque converter and transmission control. If you need a deeper understanding of how a manual transmission works, read the Wikipedia article on Manual Transmission – but for this loader, use the WA470-7 spec.
Who Should Use This Manual
If you are a home garage guy who bought a used WA470-7 for your property, you cannot afford to guess on the parking brake emergency release valve or the ECMV clutch adjustment. If you are a pro in a shop, you bill by the hour – chasing a wrong spec wastes time. This manual is for anyone who touches a fuel line or an electrical connector on this machine. Beginners should read the foreword section on handling hydraulic equipment before they crack a fitting.
Source Validity – Why OEM Matters
Aftermarket manuals reprint drawings that are sometimes reversed or missing pages. I have seen a “universal” wiring diagram that had the wrong pinout for the machine monitor. This Komatsu Workshop Manual is the same one the dealer uses. No abbreviations that do not match the factory – there is a full list of abbreviations on page 00-56. The conversion table on page 00-61 means you do not have to guess metric to imperial. It is all there.
- Does the manual cover the electrical system in full detail?
- Yes. It includes the engine control system, preheating system, power mode selector, automatic warm-up, parking brake control, system operating lamp, battery disconnect, transmission controller, work equipment control, machine monitor, rear view monitor, KOMTRAX, and all sensors. Wiring codes are explained on page 00-44.
- Can I use this for a WA470-6 or other model?
- No. This is strictly for WA470-7 serial number 10001 and up.
If you want to work on this loader without chasing bad data, you need the real thing.
