Komatsu D85C-12 Workshop Manual – Factory Specs for Undercarriage and Power Train

Komatsu D85C-12 Workshop Manual cover showing undercarriage section, 362 pages

I’ve been turning wrenches for 28 years, and nothing steams me more than a kid telling me he guessed the torque on a final drive bolt because “it felt right.” This manual is the antidote to that logic. Official Komatsu D85C-12 Workshop Manual, 362 pages of factory data – not a third-party scan or a condensed summary. You want to rebuild the undercarriage on a D85C-12? You need the specs from page 31-1 onward. Let’s talk about what’s actually in this book.

Komatsu D85C-12 Workshop Manual: What’s Inside

The manual breaks down into four major divisions: GENERAL (page 01-1), POWER TRAIN with Structure and Function (Section 21), Testing and Adjusting (Section 22), Disassembly and Assembly (Section 23), Maintenance Standard (Section 24). UNDERCARRIAGE: Structure and Function (Section 31), Disassembly and Assembly (Section 33), Maintenance Standard (Section 34). And the PIPELAYER section includes Outline, Structure and Function, and Electrical Wiring (page 55). That’s the stuff you need when the machine won’t steer or the track is loose.

Power Train Testing and Adjusting – Section 22

Section 22 is where you live if the D85C-12 transmission is slipping or the torque converter shows odd pressures. Komatsu provides step-by-step test procedures – not generic “check pressure” but specific values and adjustment sequences. Page 22-1 gives the test port locations and the required tools. You’ll need a pressure gauge set, not a backyard eyeball. This section tells you what to expect.

Why Factory Torque Specs Matter

Aftermarket manuals copy specs from who-knows-where. I’ve seen final drive flange bolts spec’d at 300 ft-lbs when OEM says 180 ft-lbs. That eats bearings. The maintenance standard in Section 24 lists every fastener torque for the undercarriage and power train. You want to avoid a thrown track on a jobsite? Use these numbers. They come from Komatsu’s engineering, not a forum post.

3 Sections for Undercarriage – Track Frame to Rollers

Undercarriage is the money maker on a dozer. Sections 31, 33, and 34 cover structure, disassembly/assembly, and maintenance standards. Track adjustment, roller replacement, sprocket removal – it’s all there. The manual tells you the order of operations and the wear limits. Don’t skip the safety notice on page 00-4: improper jacking can kill you. This book repeats that warning for a reason.

Pipela… Electrical Wiring on Page 55

The pipelayer attachment adds hydraulic and electrical complexity. Page 55 has the full wiring diagram – color codes, connector pinouts, and the control logic. If the pipelayer won’t lift or the warning lights act up, you trace it here. No guessing. The outline section also explains the structure of the attachment.

This manual is for the shop that works on these machines regularly. If you own a D85C-12 and do your own maintenance, you need this on the workbench. For the home garage guy with a 50-ton dozer? You’re probably already in over your head, but this manual will keep you from sinking deeper. The procedures assume you have Komatsu special tools – the manual lists them. If you don’t have them, you improvise at your own risk.

Komatsu printed this manual in Japan. Not a reprint, not a compilation. Every page matches what Komatsu mechanics used. The Foreword on page 00-5 states its purpose: “to give the serviceman an accurate understanding.” That’s what you get. No aftermarket interpretation.

Does the manual cover serial numbers below 24824?
No. This manual covers 24824 and up. Earlier machines differ in track frame and power train. Use with caution.
Can I use this manual for a D85E-12?
Not without cross-referencing. The D85C-12 and D85E-12 share some power train components but the undercarriage and pipelayer parts differ. The torque specs in Section 24 are specific to the C-12. If you have an E-12, look for that specific manual. That said, the structure and function sections (21, 31) give you a solid understanding of how the system works, which helps when you’re troubleshooting non-model-specific issues like hydraulic leaks or electrical shorts. But for rebuild specs, get the right manual. I’ve seen guys mix them up and end up with wrong piston clearances. Don’t be that guy.

You’ve got a D85C-12 in the yard and a piling job coming up. Stop guessing on track tension and bolt torque. Get the factory data on your screen or printed out. Komatsu WA65-5 WA70-5 WA80-5 2005 Workshop Manual and Komatsu WH609-1E0 WH613-1E0 WH713-1E0 WH714H-1E0 WH716-1E0 Workshop Manual are also available if you work on those models. For a larger wheeled model, check Komatsu PW95R-2 Workshop Manual – 520 Pages of Factory Specs. And if you need general theory on transmissions, Manual Transmission and Manual Transmission resources exist. But for this dozer? Access the Factory Manual.
