Description
Komatsu D41E, D41P 2005 Workshop Manual
If you have ever chased a fuel injection timing spec off a third-party website and ended up with a piston kissing a valve, you know why I am writing this. This Komatsu D41E, D41P 2005 Workshop Manual is the same 677-page binder that came out of the Komatsu factory in 2005, printed in Japan, serial numbers B20001 – B40000 and 50001 up. No reprints, no scanned-to-death copies, no aftermarket translation guesses. This is the OEM document that the guys who built the S6D102-1 engine wrote. I am a 28-year ASE master tech, and I will not touch a job on a D41E-6 without this open on the bench.
That manual covers both the D41E and the D41P — same drivetrain, different undercarriage. The first thing you will hit is the GENERAL section (01). Do not skip it. Page 01-1 gives you the weight table and the fuel, coolant, and lubricant specs. If you put the wrong oil in the power train hydraulic system, you will be pulling the transmission control valve before lunch. I have seen it. The TABLE OF FUEL, COOLANT AND LUBRICANTS on page 01-7-4 is your pre-job checklist.

10 STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION – What the Manual Covers
This section is where the Komatsu engineers show you how everything works before they tell you how to fix it. Structure and Function breaks down the engine control, power train, steering, brake, inching control, and the whole hydraulic circuit. You get the POWER TRAIN HYDRAULIC PIPING DIAGRAM and the actual electric wiring diagram. If you are tracking down a no-crank because the transmission neutral switch is open, the wiring diagram in this manual will save you three hours of probe work. The manual covers the transmission control valve, the steering PPC valve, the brake valve, and the priority valve. For a boneyard rebuild, this section alone is worth the price.
20 TESTING AND ADJUSTING – Valve Clearance and Fuel Timing
This is the part that separates a job done right from a job that comes back on a hook. The manual gives you the STANDARD VALUE TABLE FOR ENGINE RELATED PARTS and a full procedure for ADJUSTING VALVE CLEARANCE. You get the blow-by measurement procedure, the fuel injection timing test and adjust, and the fuel control linkage adjustment. For the chassis side, there is a specific procedure for TESTING MAIN BRAKE AND PARKING BRAKE and TESTING WEAR OF BRAKE LINING AND CLUTCH LINING. I have used the lining clearance adjustment procedure on a D41P that was chattering on turns — fixed it in forty-five minutes because the spec was right there. No guesswork.
Troubleshooting That Covers S-1 Through S-16
The troubleshooting chapter organized by symptom code is the best part of this manual. If the engine does not start, you get S-2 with two sub-trees: turns but no exhaust (fuel not injected) and exhaust smoke but no start (fuel injected). Then S-6 for lack of power, S-7 for black smoke, S-10 for excessive fuel consumption. Each symptom follows a sequence of events and a connector location table. You get the T-ADAPTER TABLE for the electrical system. For a machine that has been sitting in a field for two years, this diagnostic flow is your roadmap. It beats pulling parts and hoping.
Why OEM Beats a Reprint
I have bought aftermarket manuals that claimed to cover the D41E. They had the wrong torque for the bevel gear shaft bolts — off by 12 ft-lbs. One reprint skipped the procedure for releasing the parking brake hydraulically, which is something you need to know before you pull the final drive. This manual is Komatsu’s own SEBM007009 publication. The revision marks are stamped on every page so you know if you have the latest edition. The wiring diagrams are Komatsu’s original, not redrawn by someone who does not know the difference between a relay and a resistor. If you value your time and your safety, you use factory docs.
Audience Fit – Who Needs This 677-Page Manual
The home-garage guy who is resurrecting a D41E-6 from a salvage sale will use the Testing and Adjusting section to check the power train oil pressure and adjust the track shoe tension. The field mechanic who works on a fleet of D41Ps will keep the transmission section tabbed for quick access to the steering clutch assembly. The shop foreman who wants liability protection prints the standard value tables and hands them to the junior techs. Beginners can follow the ADJUSTING VALVE CLEARANCE procedure because it lists the tools you need — no incomplete steps. If you can read a torque wrench and a feeler gauge, this manual will walk you through it.

If you are working on a Komatsu machine with a manual transmission, the gear shift lever adjustment procedure in this manual cross-references with the general transmission linkage setup. For the manual transmission oil pressure specs, see the POWER TRAIN OIL FILTER section in chapter 10.
- Does this manual cover the S6D102-1 engine?
- Yes. The manual states that the D41E,P-6 mounts the S6D102-1 engine, and it includes engine-related standard values, valve clearance adjustment, fuel injection timing, and troubleshooting (S-1 through S-16). For detailed engine disassembly, Komatsu references the 102 Series Engine Shop Manual separately.
- What torque specs are included?
- Torque values appear throughout the Testing and Adjusting and Disassembly sections for things like the bevel gear shaft, steering clutch, brake valve, and transmission control valve. The manual gives standard and tightening torque tables in the MAINTENANCE STANDARD chapter (40). A specific torque figure must be looked up per component — the manual is not a single table dump.
- Is the wiring diagram in color?
- No. The diagrams are black-and-white line drawings with component labels and pin numbers. They are factory originals, so wire colors are indicated with letter codes (e.g., R = red, B = black). The ACTUAL ELECTRIC WIRING DIAGRAM section in chapter 10 shows the full harness layout.
- How many pages is the manual?
- 677 pages.
You need specs you can trust when a customer is standing in the bay waiting for a quote. Access the Factory Manual and get the torque, the timing, the wiring, and the troubleshooting that keeps Komatsu yellow running. Open the PDF on your tablet or print the pages you need — either way, you are working from the same document the dealer techs use.
