Chapter 14 (Maintenance Standard) is where you go when you need to measure something and know whether to scrap it or run it. Page 14-001 gives the valve seat angle, stem-to-guide clearance, and the runout limit for the camshaft journals. Those numbers are your go/no-go decision. Ignore them and you are gambling with a $4,000 engine rebuild.

Valve System: Factory Clearance Specs

The Valve system section in Chapter 11 (Structure and Function) walks you through the rocker arm shaft, push rod, and tappet geometry. Then Chapter 12 (Testing and Adjusting) gives the exact procedure for adjusting valve clearance. You need a feeler gauge and the cold clearance for intake and exhaust – those numbers are in the manual, split by engine model. No more guessing whether the spec changed between the 4D95L and 6D95L. It is printed for each.

Listening to the engine at idle and adjusting by ear is not a repair strategy. Use the factory procedure: set the piston at top dead center on compression, then set the clearance to the thousandth shown on page 12-001. That page also covers measuring compression pressure and blow-by pressure, which tells you whether the rings are shot or the valves are leaking.

Does This Manual Cover the 4D95L and 6D95L?

Torque Specs and Measurement Procedures

Every major fastener in the engine has a torque value listed in the Maintenance Standard chapter. The connecting rod bolts, the main bearing cap bolts, and the cylinder head bolts are all there with tightening sequences. The manual also gives the torque for the fuel injection nozzle holder and the injection pump mounting bolts. Do not trust a generic chart – the Komatsu spec accounts for bolt material, thread pitch, and whether the threads are lubricated or dry. Use the numbers on page 14-001 for the valve and cylinder head section, and cross-reference with the repair procedures in Chapter 15 for replacement of valve seat inserts and guides.

One thing that catches techs: the water pump and fan belt tension spec. It is measured by deflection, not by feel. Chapter 12 gives the belt tension procedure and the corresponding force in pounds. Over-tighten the belt and you kill the water pump bearing. Under-tighten and the engine runs hot. The manual gives you the middle ground.
