Description
Komatsu 150A, 150FA 2002 User Manual – What You Get on the Bench

If you are turning wrenches on a Komatsu 150A, 150FA 2002 User Manual and you don’t have the factory book on the table, you are guessing. Guessing gets people hurt. I’ve seen it. This 213-page manual is the one that came from Komatsu with the machine. It’s not a reprint, not a third-party summary, not something that leaves out the critical numbers. Page 1 tells you the serial number range – 150A from 09695 up, 150FA from 09695 up. That means if your machine falls in that range, this manual is the exact match. Everything else is risk.
I’ll walk you through what’s inside so you know whether this belongs on your shelf or in the trash. Spoiler – it belongs on the shelf next to your torque wrench.
Engine Warm-Up and Shutdown: Factory Procedure
Section 18 covers engine warm-up. Section 19 covers shutdown. Each one has sub-steps. After Engine Warm-Up tells you what to check – oil pressure, coolant temp, air pressure. The shutdown sequence in 19.1 includes checks after the key is off. Most aftermarket books skip these details. You need the idle time, the gauge readings, the order of operations. Why? Because a cold-start on a diesel with turbo you let idle three minutes minimum. The manual tells you that. Page 1 doesn’t have that data, but the procedure inside does. You follow it or you replace a turbo.
Hydraulic Pump Options: Thirty vs Fifty Gallon
Section 14.2.1 describes the thirty-gallon pump. 14.2.2 covers the fifty-gallon pump. These are not the same machine. The thirty-gallon pump uses Manual Transmission – a different drive configuration from the fifty. If you order a pump gasket from a generic source without checking which pump you have, you waste a day. The manual shows flow rates and port locations. The fifty-gallon pump also has different pressure spec. Do not guess. Look at the identification in 14.4.4 – Instrument Panel Identification – and match your serial number.
Safety Before Operation: Pre-Unloading Checks and Transport
Section 7, Pre-Unloading Checks, and section 8, Machine Transport, are not optional reading. 7.1 and 8.1 cover driving the crane onto a trailer – tire pressures, brake tests, outrigger position. 8.2 covers shipping – tie-down points, center of gravity. I’ve seen a crane tip because someone skipped the pre-unloading checklist. The manual gives you a list. Use it. Page 2 of the manual lists other publications – parts book, shop manual – but the operation manual itself is where the safety steps live. If you don’t have this, you are running blind.
Periodic Service Charts: Boom and Chassis
Sections 24.4 through 24.10 give you the periodic service charts. There are separate charts for 3-section boom (24.5), 4-section boom (24.6), chassis with Clark axle (24.8), chassis with Meritor axle (24.9). Each chart lists intervals – daily/10 hour, weekly/50 hour, and longer. The daily section 24.11 includes steering cylinder bearings, tie rod ends, transmission shift linkage, hydraulic oil level, engine oil level, transmission oil level, water trap, air cleaner system. That’s nine checks. Every one of them has a spec. The air filter element cleaning procedure in 24.12 tells you to use compressed air at 30 psi or water – do not oil the element. That kind of detail saves an engine. Without the manual you might use the wrong cleaning method.
Audience Fit: Who Actually Needs This Manual?
If you own a 150A or 150FA crane and you are the operator, the mechanic, or the guy responsible for maintenance – you need this. The manual is written for the guy in the seat. Section 15, Before Starting Engine, and section 16, Entering the Operator’s Cab, walk you through daily checks. Section 20 covers lifting capacities – unknown weight (20.2), known weight (20.3), pick and carry (20.4), operating radius and lift zones (20.5). These are not generic load charts. They are specific to the 150A/150FA with given boom lengths and jib configurations. If you are a shop owner, this manual is the thing you hand to the tech and say “check the torque before you touch the outrigger pins.” Not having it is liability.
Source Validity: Why an OEM Manual Beats Aftermarket Every Time
Komatsu printed this manual in October 2002 at DataKom Publishing Division. Page 2 shows the parts and service publications list – the shop manual is SMC-150A-3 and SMC-150FA, the parts book is BEPB003600 for paper. That is a specific paper trail. An aftermarket manual will give you generic torque values for “a Komatsu crane.” This one gives the exact torque for the 150A steering cylinder bearings, for the outrigger pivot pins, for the axle trunnion bearings. Section 24.13 through 24.20 list those. You cannot get that from a third-party site. Komatsu 150A, 150FA 2004 Workshop Manual – 756 Pages of Factory Specs is the companion shop manual – this user manual is for operation and maintenance, not heavy overhaul. But for daily work, this is the document you keep in the cab.
FAQ
- Does this manual cover the electrical system wiring diagrams?
- No. This is an operation and maintenance manual, not a shop manual. Wiring diagrams are in the shop manual (SMC-150A-3 or SMC-150FA). This manual covers start-up, shutdown, daily checks, lubrication, and periodic maintenance. For electrical troubleshooting, get the shop manual.
- What torque values are listed?
- Torque specs appear in the periodic service sections – for example, outrigger pivot pins and axle trunnion bearings in sections 24.13 to 24.20. Page numbers are not listed here, but the manual uses foot-pounds and inch-pounds. Never use aftermarket torque charts for critical fasteners. Use this manual.
If you are still reading, you already know you need the factory data. The Komatsu 150A, 150FA 2002 User Manual is the original OEM document. 213 pages, serial number verification, every maintenance interval from 10 hours to 6 months, and safety procedures that keep the machine upright. Komatsu PC95 1995 User Manual – 147 Pages is a different machine but same principle – factory documentation beats guesswork. Komatsu D375A-5 User Manual – Operation & Safety Guide is another example. For the 150A/150FA, this manual is the one. Manual Transmission fluid specs? Section 14.2 covers hydraulic pumps, but the transmission details are in the chassis sections. You have the book. Use it. Access the Factory Manual.
