Description
Kohler CV17, CV26, CV18, CV20, CV22 Service Manual – What You Get When You Skip the Aftermarket Junk
I’ve seen more engines come in with stripped threads and bent valves because somebody used a generic manual than I care to count. That’s why when you need to work on a Kohler CV17, CV26, CV18, CV20, CV22 vertical crankshaft Command engine, you get the OEM Service Manual – the same book the factory techs use. 199 pages of actual specs, not a reprint of a reprint. If you’re pulling a flywheel or setting valve lash, this is the only document I trust on my bench.

Factory Torque Specs and Tolerances – No Guessing
Section 10 (Inspection and Reconditioning) gives you the wear limits for cylinder bores, valve guides, and crankshaft journals. The manual doesn’t say “tighten snug.” It tells you the exact ft-lbs for head bolts and the degree angle for the final turn. Page 73 lists the governor gear clearance. Without these numbers you’re just guessing – and guessing costs you a head gasket or a scored piston. I’ve used these specs to rebuild CV20s that ran another 2000 hours after.
Electrical System: Section 8 – Why OEM Wiring Matters
The Electrical section includes the charging circuit, starter solenoid, and regulator-rectifier tests. Aftermarket wiring diagrams often swap terminal colors or omit the flywheel key alignment. Section 8 shows the actual pinouts for the Kohler ignition module and the resistance checks for the stator. If you’ve ever chased a no-spark on a CV18, you know that pulling the flywheel without the correct puller (listed in Section 2 – Special Tools) can crack the magnet. This manual saves you that headache.
Fuel System and Governor – Don’t Skip Section 5
Fuel system coverage includes both the standard carburetor (Section 5) and the EFI variant (Section 5B). The governor adjustment procedure on a CV22 is finicky – one turn too tight and the engine bogs; one turn loose and it overspeeds. The manual gives the static and dynamic adjustment method with the spring hole positions. I’ve seen a DIYer ruin a brand-new carb by over-tightening the main jet plug. The torque for that plug is in Section 11 (Reassembly).
Disassembly and Reassembly: Section 9 & 11 – Keep It Straight
Section 9 walks you through removing the cylinder head, sump, and crankshaft with the correct order. Section 11 then gives the reassembly sequence, including the sealant locations and the break-in procedure. The manual specifies the Loctite type for the flywheel nut – not “use thread locker.” That kind of detail keeps the engine from grenading on the first startup. I keep a copy of this manual open on my tablet when I’m doing a top-end on a CV26.
3 Reasons This Manual Beats the Aftermarket Copies
- OEM part numbers: You get the actual Kohler numbers for gaskets, seals, and bearings – not a cross-reference that might be wrong.
- Factory diagnostic flowcharts: Section 3 has troubleshooting trees for low power, hard starting, and oil leaks. Aftermarket manuals rearrange the steps and miss critical safety warnings.
- Safety warnings: Section 1 covers the rotating part hazards (page 3 of the manual). Aftermarket reprints often omit the “hot parts” caution or the warning about kickback when pull-starting.
Audience Fit: Who Needs This Manual?
If you’re a home garage mechanic rebuilding a lawn tractor or a small engine repair shop that sees Kohler Command engines weekly, this is your reference. The manual assumes you have basic tools but not that you know every trick. It covers the CV17 (used on 18-20 HP riders), the CV20, CV22, and CV26 (common on zero-turn mowers). The EFI supplement (Section 5B) is rare to find in aftermarket copies, but it’s here. You get the fuel pressure specs and injector resistance values that you need for electronic troubleshooting.
Source Validity: OEM Print, Not a Third-Party Scan
This manual is a direct factory document – same as what Kohler ships to dealers. The PDF is clean, searchable, and all 199 pages are present. I’ve compared it to an aftermarket version and found missing diagrams in the Lubrication System section (Section 6) and wrong torque values in the flywheel section. Stick with the OEM. Frequently Asked Questions
- Does this manual cover the CV25?
- This edition covers CV17, CV18, CV20, CV22, and CV26. The CV25 is not listed in the Table of Contents. For CV25, see the separate manual Manual Transmission.
- What’s the difference between Section 5 and Section 5B?
- Section 5 covers the standard carbureted fuel system with the mechanical governor. Section 5B is the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) supplement. If your engine has an injector and an ECU, you need Section 5B for the diagnostic codes and fuel pressure test. The manual includes both.
I’ve used this manual to rebuild a CV20 on a Saturday and had it running by Sunday afternoon. The Manual Transmission specs are here. If you want to do the job right the first time, access the Factory Manual.
