If you have ever tried to order a seal for a boom cylinder using an aftermarket parts list, you know exactly what I mean when I say this: those generic books will cost you time and money. The part numbers are wrong, the illustrations are fuzzy, and the serial number breaks are missing. You end up pulling the wrong seal kit, the machine sits, and the customer stares at you. That is why I refuse to use anything but an OEM parts catalog. It covers S/N 0192001 thru 0192007 and 0160000052 & After. That is the kind of specificity you need when a $4000 transmission rebuild hangs on a $12 bushing.

Let me walk you through what you get inside this book. The Table of Contents alone tells you this is not some scanned-into-a-PDF mess. It is organized into six major sections, each packed with figures that reference actual JLG engineering drawings. I have been turning wrenches for 28 years, and I can tell you the difference between this manual and a third-party compilation is the difference between a Snap-On torque wrench and a Harbor Freight special. One gets the job done right; the other gets you a comeback.

Frame & Attaching Parts – What the JLG TF6-42 Parts Catalog Covers

Section 1 is not just a frame picture. It gives you Figure 1-1 Frame Shrouding & Trim and Figure 1-2 Axle Mounting. That axle mounting figure is critical when you are pulling a Carraro or Dana axle. The manual shows every bolt, washer, and bracket with its OEM number. You will not find a generic “axle mount kit” here – you get the exact JLG part that fits that chassis. Page 1-10 has the axle mounting diagram. Use it before you order anything.

Boom Assembly: Bearing Pads, Shims, and Chain Rollers

Section 2 is all boom – three sections, plus bearing pads and shims. Figure 2-2 and 2-4 give you the shim stack for the first and second boom sections. If you have ever had a boom that wobbles sideways because someone threw away the shims, you know this is the page you need. Figure 2-7 shows the push beam/extend chain and roller assembly. That chain is under heavy load; you need the correct roller part number or you are buying twice. Every figure in Section 2 includes a parts list with quantities and notes. No guesswork.

7 Attachment Types Covered

Section 3 lists twelve figures covering everything from a 48” carriage to a fork-mounted lifting hook. Figure 3-1 through 3-12 includes buckets, slope piler carriages, truss booms with and without winch, drywall carriage, swing fork, personnel platform, transformer platform, forks, and hooks. If your TF6-42 came with any of these, you have the correct breakdown. Figure 3-9 (Personnel Platform Assembly) includes the safety latch parts – do not skip that.

Engine and Transmission – 22 Exploded Views

Section 4 goes deep. Figures 4-1 and 4-2 show the engine from left and right. Figure 4-3 is the Deere engine specifically. Then Figures 4-8 through 4-21 are all transmission breakdowns: converter housing, torque converter, gear groups, pump drive, charging pump, shaft groups, electric control, drop box. Twenty-two figures in total for the transmission. If you are rebuilding that Powershift, you need these pages. I have seen techs install a thrust washer backwards because the aftermarket illustration had it drawn wrong. JLG’s drawing is correct – period.

Does This Manual Cover the Carraro and Dana Axles?

Yes, both. Section 5 (Drive Train) covers the front and rear axles for both Carraro and Dana variants. Figures 5-1 through 5-19 are Carraro; Figures 5-20 through 5-39 are Dana. Each axle assembly is broken down into housing, steering components, gears, differential, double joint, brakes, wheel hub, and reduction gears. There is also a drive shaft assembly (Figure 5-40) and tires & rims (Figure 5-41). If you are swapping a ring and pinion, you need the crush sleeve part number from Figure 5-15 or 5-35. That is the level of detail you get.

One more thing about this manual: it is from JLG themselves. Revised nine times between 2004 and 2014, with the “I” revision being the final update. The effectivity page (page i) gives you the history. When you buy aftermarket, you get a reprint of an old revision, or worse, a copy that omits the effectivity page entirely. Then you order a part that was superseded two revisions ago. That does not happen here.
