Description
JLG G6-42A 2014 Parts Catalog – Factory OEM Parts Manual

If you have ever tried ordering a replacement bearing pad for a G6-42A boom section using a generic aftermarket parts list, you know the frustration. Wrong numbers, missing illustrations, and zero support from the parts counter when your order doesn’t fit. That is why I keep the JLG G6-42A 2014 Parts Catalog within arm’s reach at the shop. This is the exact same binder JLG technicians use – 826 pages of OEM drawings and part indexes, not some scanned copy that lost detail on the critical fastener callouts. Need the axle mounting hardware breakdown? Page 1-16. Want to see how the ZF transmission splits apart? Figures 4-33 through 4-47 walk you through every subassembly. There is no guesswork because the part numbers come straight from the factory.
Let’s talk about what this manual actually contains. The Table of Contents is laid out by major machine sections – Frame, Boom, Attachments, Engine & Attaching Parts, and Drive Train. Each section is further split into figures, and each figure is an exploded isometric drawing with a numbered parts list. You get the JLG part number, description, and quantity. I have used this catalog to pull a torque converter seal for a Dana transmission (Figure 4-21) and a shim kit for the third boom section (Figure 2-6) without calling the dealer once. That is time saved and money in the job.
Frame & Attaching Parts – Axle Mounting and Shrouding
Section 1 covers the chassis structure. Figure 1-1 details the frame shrouding and trim panels – useful when you need to replace that cracked fiberglass hood or a missing access cover. Figure 1-2 breaks down the axle mounting hardware. If you are pulling a Carraro front axle out of a G6-42A, you want the correct bolt lengths and isolation mounts. This manual lists them by JLG number, so you can order the exact kit instead of scrounging through a bin. I have watched guys waste an hour trying to make a generic bolt work. Do not be that guy.
Boom Sections: Bearing Pads, Spacers, and Shims
Section 2 is where the real wear items live. The G6-42A has a three-stage boom, and each stage has its own set of bearing pads, spacers, and shims. Figures 2-2, 2-4, and 2-6 are dedicated to those parts. You need to check slop in the first boom section? Figure 2-1 shows the full assembly; Figure 2-2 isolates the pads. The manual even lists the thickness of each shim so you can order the right one without measuring the old, worn part under a micrometer. Also included are the push beam and extend chain assembly (Figure 2-7) and the manual quick switch attachment (Figure 2-8). That quick switch bracket has a habit of wearing out the locking pins – the part numbers are right there.
3 Engine Platforms in One Manual
Section 4 covers engines and attaching parts, and this is where the catalog really earns its keep. The G6-42A was offered with three different power plants: John Deere, Perkins, and Cummins. Each engine has its own set of figures. For example, John Deere engine assembly left-hand view is Figure 4-1, right-hand is 4-2. Perkins is Figure 4-3, and Cummins installation is Figure 4-4. You also get separate radiator assemblies, air cleaner installations, and exhaust systems per engine. If you are doing a water pump replacement on a Perkins, you go to Figure 4-6 and there is the exploded view with the gasket part number. This is the kind of detail that prevents a shop from having to reorder because the aftermarket catalog listed the wrong seal.
Get the Right Part Number the First Time
Transmission coverage is equally thorough. Both the Dana and ZF transmissions are documented with full disassembly illustrations. The Dana section alone has 16 figures (4-18 through 4-32) covering the converter housing, case, torque converter, gear groups, pump drive, and electric control group. The ZF transmission section runs from Figure 4-33 to 4-47, including the torque converter and input, gearbox housing, all shaft groups, power take-off, and control unit. Need a forward clutch piston seal for a ZF? Figure 4-37 gives you the seal part number. Period. No cross-referencing with a third-party website that may or may not have the supersession information.
Does This Manual Cover the Dana Transmission?
Yes, and it covers every version of it fitted to the G6-42A. The TOC lists Dana Transmission Installation (Figure 4-18), then dives into the converter housing group, case and plate group, torque converter group, gear group, pump drive group, charging pump group, reverse idler group, forward and reverse shaft group, third shaft group, first & second shaft group, output shaft group, electric control group, drive plate group, and drop box group. That is 14 distinct figure sequences for the Dana alone. You also get the ZF transmission with its own 13 figures. If you are rebuilding either transmission, having the correct part numbers for seals, bearings, and friction discs is the difference between a reliable rebuild and a comebacker.
Bottom line: do not trust aftermarket parts catalogs for this machine. JLG updates their manuals through revision letters – this 2014 version is revision M, incorporating all changes from December 2004 forward. The effectivity page lists every revision history. You can verify that the manual matches your machine’s serial number range: 0190001 thru 0190457 & 0160000022 thru 0160048656. That level of traceability is missing from generic parts lists.
- Does this manual include part numbers for attachments like the truss boom or personnel platform?
- Yes. Section 3 has 21 figures covering everything from the standard tilt carriage (Figure 3-1) to the fork mounted lifting hook (Figure 3-14) and the 8 ft side tilt electric mast (Figure 3-20). Part numbers are listed for each component, including hydraulic hoses and pins.
- How do I know if my G6-42A uses a John Deere or Perkins engine?
- Check your serial number plate on the frame. Then use the engine section (Figures 4-1 through 4-7) to match the correct parts. The manual includes separate illustrations for each engine, so there is no confusion.
