Description
Isuzu TF Workshop Manual – Factory Axle and Drivetrain Specs
I’ve pulled enough junkyard aftermarket printouts out of toolboxes to know the difference between real data and a photocopy of a photocopy. The Isuzu TF Workshop Manual is the real thing – 180 pages of Isuzu’s own axle and drivetrain procedures. If you’re rebuilding a rear axle, pressing in a spider bearing, or tracing a vibration in the propeller shaft, this is the document that keeps you from wasting time on the wrong torque value. I wrote this page because I’ve seen too many DIY guys snap bolts on a differential cover because they trusted a generic manual. This one comes from Isuzu’s International Service & Parts division in Tokyo.

Torque Specs and Fluid Capacities – Why OEM Matters
The torque spec table on page 4A-5 lists every fastener in the propeller shaft assembly – from the companion flange nut down to the smallest U-bolt. Don’t rely on a third-party database that might be for a different model year. I’ve seen the results: stripped threads, sheared bolts, and a driveline that vibrates at highway speed because the flange wasn’t torqued to spec. The manual also spells out the recommended liquid gasket and thread locking agents for the rear axle and front drive axle sections. If you’re working on an Isuzu TF, these are the numbers you need.
The torque values for the front drive axle are in section 4C2. Page numbers are not repeated because I trust you to find them. But the spec is there – for the axle shaft nut, the hub bolts, and the differential bearing cap.
Torque specs are on page 4A-5. Use them.
Propeller Shaft Run-Out and Universal Joint Rebuild
Section 4A breaks down the propeller shaft into front and rear assemblies. The diagnosis procedure for run-out and spider bearing play is written in plain language – set the shaft in V-blocks, rotate it slowly, and measure with a dial indicator. Acceptable run-out is listed. If it’s over, you need to replace the tube or the joint. The manual walks through universal joint disassembly and reassembly step by step, including the order of removing the snap rings and pressing out the bearings. I’ve rebuilt a dozen U-joints using these pages and never had a failure. That’s because the manual tells you exactly which way to orient the grease zerk and how much to torque the retainer bolts.
Rear Axle and Differential – Full Disassembly and Reassembly
Section 4B covers the rear axle assembly from the housing to the differential cage. The disassembly sequence starts with draining the oil and pulling the axle shafts. The manual calls out special tools – you’ll need a puller for the differential bearing and a gauge to set the backlash. The LSD section (Limited Slip Differential) has its own inspection and repair procedures. If you’ve got clutch pack chatter in a turn, the troubleshooting guide points to worn plates or incorrect preload. The reassembly torque for the ring gear bolts is critical – page 4A-5 again for the flange nuts, but also in section 4B for the differential bolts. Don’t mix them up.
Limited Slip Differential (LSD) – Factory Troubleshooting Steps
LSD units require specific friction modifier and preload settings. The manual includes a troubleshooting table that lists symptoms like “no differential action” and “chattering during turn” with corresponding causes – wrong oil, worn clutch plates, or incorrect shim thickness. The disassembly and reassembly for the LSD is separate from the standard differential. Follow the order in the manual. If you skip the inspection of the clutch plates, you’ll be pulling the carrier again in 10,000 miles. That’s a waste of your weekend and your seals.
Front Drive Axle and Hub Assembly – 4×4 and 4×2 Coverage
Section 4C1 is where you find the front drive axle, drive shaft, and hub disc assemblies. This manual covers 4×2 (except high ride), 4×4, 4×4 rigid hub, 4×4 shift on the fly, and 4×4 manual locking hub models. Each hub type has its own disassembly and reassembly procedure. The bushing replacement step on the front axle drive shaft tells you the proper press fit and the standard caulk measure. I’ve had a shop apprentice try to hammer a bushing in sideways – the manual prevents that by showing the correct tool and sequence. The troubleshooting section at the end of 4C1 lists common issues like axle shaft noise or hub looseness and gives the fix.
Shift On The Fly System – Electrical and Mechanical Disassembly
Section 4C2 is dedicated to the Shift On The Fly system – the electrical equipment, the actuator, and the associated parts. The disassembly steps include how to remove the vacuum motor or electric switch depending on the model. Torque specifications for the shift motor mounting bolts are listed. The inspection and repair section covers wiring continuity checks and component replacement. If your 4×4 indicator light is blinking but the front hubs aren’t locking, start here. The manual gives you the test points without needing to splice into the harness.
This manual is for anyone who owns or services an Isuzu TF – whether you’re a home garage enthusiast doing your first axle service or a shop tech who needs the factory data to avoid comebacks. I’ve worked on these trucks in San Antonio for years. The aftermarket manuals miss details like the recommended thread locking agent for the differential ring gear bolts. This one doesn’t. If you want to check the complete service information for the engine and transmission, look at the Isuzu TF Service Manual. For model-specific updates, the Isuzu TF 2007 Workshop Manual covers later production changes. And if you’re only working on the powertrain, the Isuzu TF Gasoline Engine Workshop Manual has the engine-side torque specs.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does this manual cover the 4×4 manual locking hub models?
- Yes. Section 4C1 includes a dedicated subsection for 4×4 Manual Locking Hub Model with disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly steps.
- What about the torque specs for the propeller shaft flange nut – are they in foot-pounds or inch-pounds?
- The torque specifications in this manual are given in foot-pounds. Page 4A-5 lists the propeller shaft flange nut at a specific value (you’ll see it when you open the PDF). There is also a section in 4B for the rear axle pinion nut. Always use a calibrated torque wrench on these fasteners. I’ve seen a flange nut torqued by feel come loose on the highway, and the driveline slung out under the truck. That’s not a quick fix. The manual gives you the number – use it.
