This manual is split into three separate volumes: Technical Manual (Operational Principle), Technical Manual (Troubleshooting), and Workshop Manual. The one you’re looking at is the Operational Principle volume – the one that explains how every system works and gives you the factory check and adjustment procedures. Bolt Tightening Torque: The Numbers You Will Use

The manual opens with a full section on general information. That sounds boring, but it’s where the torque values live. Page 26 gives you the tightening torque for hexagon bolts and flanged hexagon bolts. Don’t trust the aftermarket cheat sheets – Hitachi uses a specific bolt grade and tightening sequence. The same section covers hose band torque, liquid gasket application, and even how to wind seal tape correctly. If you skip this page, you’re guessing. And guessing on a loader that runs 40,000 pounds of breakout force? That’s a blown seal or a dropped linkage waiting to happen.

Does This Manual Cover the Transmission?

Yes, and in detail. Section 32 is Function & Structure of the T/C and T/M group. It shows the torque converter structure, the lock-up clutch (option), the shift lever positions, and the full power flow path for every gear: forward 1st through 4th, reverse 1st through 3rd. If you’re diagnosing a slipping clutch or a delayed shift, you need the oil pressure specs and the time lag measurements from section 33. That section covers the exact procedure to measure clutch oil pressure and determine time lag. Without those numbers, you’re swapping parts until one works. That’s expensive.

3 Critical Checks in the Chassis Group

Section 12 and 13 cover the front and rear chassis, including the center pin and linkage pins. Three things I see get neglected: the bucket hinge pin liner installation (check section 13), the center pin shim adjustment, and the dust seal on the lower center pin. Clarifying the torque data one more time because it matters. Page 26 is where the bolt tightening torque tables are – both hexagon and flanged hexagon bolts. The manual also includes a lubrication chart with recommended lubricants and the coolant specification with antifreeze mixture ratios. These are not suggestions. They are factory specifications. Use wrong coolant and you risk liner pitting. Use wrong oil in the torque converter gear pump and you get cavitation. The manual says exactly what to use.

Section 22 breaks down the entire driveline: engine mounts, radiator mount, three propeller shaft assemblies (transmission-to-converter, front differential, rear differential), axle support, and the conventional differential. It explains power transmission and differential operation during straight travel and turning. Section 23 picks up with the check and adjustment procedures – measuring engine speed, engine oil pressure, propeller shaft phase, propeller shaft tightening torque, axle nut tightening, and the differential gear adjustment procedure including preload and tooth contact. If you’re rebuilding an axle, you need the bearing installation and oil seal installation steps from this section.

This manual also covers the hydraulic circuit diagram for the transmission and torque converter. It shows the oil flow path in the torque converter line and the transmission line. The modulator valve function and operation are explained, and the control valve assembly with clutch solenoid valves, accumulator assembly, and direct charge valve. If you are chasing a hydraulic leak or a pressure drop, you trace it with this diagram. I’ve used these diagrams to fix a lock-up clutch solenoid issue that had three other shop techs stumped. The manual gives you the circuit, the oil flow, and the valve operation. That’s all you need.

One thing about sourcing: aftermarket manuals usually copy the illustrations but omit the notes on safety and the step-by-step assembly cautions. This Hitachi manual has a full safety symbols section (page 4) that defines DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, and IMPORTANT. It tells you what happens if you skip a step. The liquid gasket procedure includes cautions regarding reassembly and how to apply screw lock agent. That kind of detail isn’t in a generic PDF. It’s OEM or nothing for me.
