Description

Every shop has that job where you pull a DTC 14 or a DTC 22, and the guy next to you wants to throw parts at it. Before you swap an ECM or a sensor you don’t need, grab the Gmdat 3.0L Repair Manual. I’ve been turning wrenches for 28 years, and the first thing I tell any junior tech: start with the troubleshooting procedure. This manual is laid out exactly that way. It’s 89 pages of factory diagnostic charts, circuit descriptions, and repair steps that came from the same people who designed the system. Troubleshooting Procedure: Where Do I Start?

DTC Codes and ECM Diagnostics
Table 1 in the manual lists every ECM diagnostic code available: DTC 12, 14, 15, 21, 22, 31, 33, 34, 42, 51. Each one has a dedicated section with circuit description, troubleshooting chart, and what to check. For example, DTC 14 – Engine Coolant Temperature sensor circuit high temperature indicated. The chart tells you exactly which pins to test and what resistance values to expect. The manual also covers ECM Learning Ability and Field Service Mode. You learn how to clear DTC’s and put the system into diagnostic mode without a scan tool. That can save your butt in the field.
Fuel System Repairs – TBI Unit and Injectors
The Repairs section covers the fuel system in detail. Every step is there: Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure, Fuel Pump Replacement, TBI Unit removal and cleaning, Fuel Meter Body removal and installation, Fuel Injector removal and installation, Pressure Regulator inspection, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) removal and installation, Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve removal and cleaning. System Test Charts – ECT and TPS Checks
The System Test Charts section is where you verify sensor output without guesswork. The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Test gives you the temperature-to-resistance curve. The Throttle Position (TP) Sensor Check shows you how to measure signal voltage and sweep. There’s also a Minimum Idle Speed adjustment procedure, Idle Air Control (IAC) system check, and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor output test. These charts use the same procedures GM techs used in the field. No shortcuts, no generic data.
One thing this manual does better than any aftermarket book: it tells you what to do when things go wrong in real time. The Troubleshooting – Poor Operation section has individual fault trees for engine quits while driving, hard start, detonation, dieseling, backfire, high fuel usage, and rough idle. Each fault lists additional checks and the likely root cause. This is not a reprint. This is the original factory file.
Aftermarket manuals will give you a wiring diagram and call it done. This one gives you the complete circuit description for every subsystem, including the Governor System and Electronic Spark Timing (EST). It even covers static discharge damage precautions – something most DIYers ignore until they fry an ECM. Don’t be that guy.
