The ammeter in these tractors is a shunt-type – all system current passes through it. If you hook it up backward, the needle moves opposite to charge direction. Page 1 shows the ammeter connected between the cutout relay output and the ignition switch. The cutout relay has three terminals: battery, generator, and ground. On the 9N and 2N, the generator field is grounded through the cutout relay until the engine starts – that prevents parasitic drain. If your ammeter reads discharge with the engine running, you’ve got a cutout relay that isn’t closing, or the generator isn’t producing.
