Description
Fiat Powertrain Technologies Bravo, Brava 2001 Workshop Manual

I’ve been wrenching for 28 years. I’ve seen what happens when a guy trusts an aftermarket manual for a timing belt job on a 1.8L 16V. The bolt snaps at 45 lb-ft when it should have been 37. Then you’re drilling out a broken bolt from an aluminum head on a Saturday. Fiat Powertrain Technologies Bravo, Brava 2001 Workshop Manual is the factory book. 712 pages of what the guys in Turin wrote for the dealers. If you’re going to touch a Bravo or Brava engine, you need this.
Engine 1747 16V: Removal and Refitting Procedure
Section 10 of this volume dedicates pages 1–35 to the 1747 16V engine removal and refitting. This is not a summary. It tells you which brackets come off first, which bolts are single-use, and the exact orientation for the engine sling. You’ll find the required tool list at the start of the section – factory part numbers for the lifting fixture and the flywheel locking tool. If you skip that list, you’ll be hunting for a 12-point socket at 8 PM on a Sunday.
What Torque Values Are Listed for the 1.8L?
The technical data update (section 00, pages 1–9) gives the 1999 update for the 1747 16V. Head bolt torque sequence, main bearing cap values, and the flywheel bolt angle – all in Nm and lb-ft. Page 34 of the engine section shows the final tightening step. I have torqued more head bolts than most people have had hot meals, and I still check that page every time I do a 1.8L. One wrong value, and you’re pulling the head again.
Electrical Wiring Diagrams: 98 Range Versions
Section 55 is 249 pages of wiring diagrams for 1998 range versions. These replace the diagrams from Volume 3 – the factory explicitly tells you to discard the old print no. 506.670/16. If you are tracing a short in the ABS system or a no-start on a Brava, you go to page 249 for the updated circuits. Aftermarket diagrams consolidate multiple years into one drawing. This manual separates them by range. That matters when the pinout changed between ’98 and ’99.
3 Fuel System Updates in This Volume
Print no. 506.670/20 and 506.670/22 cover fuel system updates for three engines: the 1242 8V Euro 3, the 1596 16V Euro 3, and the 1910 JTD Euro 3. Each has its own subsection with removal, refitting, and pressure specs. For the JTD diesel, the injection pump timing procedure is detailed. You need the factory values for rail pressure – the manual lists them in the technical data pages. Do not use a generic diesel manual for this.
Air Bag Systems: Factory Service Bulletins
Print no. 506.670/19 (XI/1999) adds section 55 pages 1–38 covering new air bag features and side bags. This includes deployment precautions, connector handling, and diagnostic flow charts. The safety warnings are not suggestions. One misstep with a live air bag module can cost you a trip to the ER. The manual tells you the exact discharge time after battery disconnect.
Get the Right Specs Before You Turn a Bolt
If you own a Bravo or Brava with the 1.8L 16V or any of the Euro 3 engines, this 2001 workshop manual is the single source you trust. The factory data never lies. For planned maintenance intervals, see Fiat Bravo Brava Service Manual Vol 1 – Section: Planned Maintenance. For earlier model years, Fiat Bravo Brava Workshop Manual Volume 4 and Fiat Bravo/Brava Service Manual Volume 3 cover the 1998 and earlier ranges. The wiring diagrams for the transmission controls are also covered in the Manual Transmission guide, and the factory references the same transmission Manual Transmission for torque converter lockup logic.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does this manual cover the 1.2L 8V engine?
- Yes. Section 10 includes updates for the 1242 16V and 1242 8V Euro 3 fuel system. But the main focus is the 1.8L 16V.
- Is this the same as a Haynes manual?
- No. This is the factory service manual from Fiat Powertrain Technologies. Haynes rewrites and simplifies. This manual contains every torque spec, every wiring diagram, every diagnostic procedure as written for Fiat dealerships. If you need to trace a short in the ABS system, you use the wiring diagrams on page 249, not a generic drawing. The difference is time and safety. Aftermarket manuals often skip steps or combine model years – this one is year-specific for the 2001 range.
- Can I use this on a Brava?
- Yes. The manual covers both Bravo and Brava models, as indicated by the title “Fiat Bravo/a”.
- Do I need any special software to open the PDF?
- A standard PDF reader works.
This manual belongs on your hard drive and your workbench. Stop guessing and start using the same specs the factory technicians used. Access the Factory Manual.
