FIAT Kobelco Cranes Repair Manual – Factory Boom Repair Guidance

You’re looking at a FIAT Kobelco Cranes Repair Manual that covers exactly one thing: welding boom sections back to factory strength. Not a general crane maintenance book, not a parts catalog – this is the OEM procedure for repairing laced bases, boom tips, inserts, and tower crane (luffing) sections on tubular code booms. If you’ve ever had a boom repair crack after six months because somebody used a 5/32 electrode on thin lacing, you know why this 20-page document exists.

Boom Materials: Why You Can’t Substitute Steel

The manual makes this clear on page 1: the boom uses various high-quality strength materials. Repairs must use material obtained from authorized KOBELCO dealers. Bulk lacing material requires the part number of the boom section to be repaired, plus machine model and serial number. Individually coped lacing? Same deal. You don’t guess the steel grade – you order it. That’s how you avoid a chord-to-lacing weld that fails under load. FIAT Kobelco B95-B200 2004 Repair Manual – OEM Factory Specs covers similar material sourcing for backhoe loaders, but this crane manual is specific about tubular booms.

Welding Electrode Specs: AWS E7016/1016 Only

Page 3 states electrodes must be high-quality dry low-hydrogen type AWS E7016/1016. Approved diameters: 3/32 inch (2.4mm) or 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Do not use anything larger than 1/8 inch because the thin lacing walls make it easy to burn through. Electrodes must come in hermetically sealed containers and be used within four hours of opening. Unused electrodes go into a rod dryer at 510–600°F (300–350°C), then an insulated holding oven above 200°F (120°C). All welding uses alternating current with at least 250 amps. This is not a “grab whatever rod is on the shelf” situation.

Welder Qualification: Practice Before You Burn

The manual recommends using damaged lacing removed from the boom as practice material before touching the repair. Lacing has thin walls; chord sections are heavier. The welder needs a delicate touch and a high degree of skill. “See Figure 1” references a diagram that shows proper pre-weld setup. If you skip the practice step, you risk burning through critical lacing or depositing cold weld on heat-treated steel. FIAT KOBELCO B95-B200 Repair Manual 2004 also emphasizes welder qualification, but this crane manual adds the specific practice requirement.

Extent of Repair: Know When to Stop

Page 4 starts a section on extent of repair. It notes the number of lacing pipes previously replaced. If the damage exceeds a certain threshold – the manual gives the logic but you need the full text – you don’t repair the section; you replace it. Kobe Steel assumes zero liability for failures traceable to repairs by uncertified welders. That’s printed right on page 1. This manual is the guide for when a certified Kobe Steel welder isn’t available, but it puts the responsibility squarely on the person doing the work.

OEM Source vs. Aftermarket: The 20-Page Difference

Twenty pages doesn’t sound like a lot until you realize each page carries factory weld specs, material part-number requirements, and cautions that aftermarket sources omit. Aftermarket crane repair books will tell you “use a low-hydrogen rod” but won’t give you the 510–600°F rod dryer temperature or the 250-amp AC requirement. They won’t tell you to get lacing material from Kobelco with the exact part number. This is a 20-page, factory-original PDF that came out of Kobelco’s service system – not a reprint, not a summary. For other models, see FIAT Kobelco EX355 2002 Technical Manual – OEM Factory Specs.

What If You’re a Home Garage Enthusiast?

If you own a Kobelco crane and want to avoid a $2,000 dealer weld-out, this manual is your insurance policy. You still need welding skill, the right electrodes, and the discipline to practice first. But without this document you don’t know the material specifications. Manual Transmission knowledge doesn’t apply here – crane boom welding is a different beast. The manual is also useful for fleet maintenance shops that employ certified welders but need the OEM procedure documented for liability records.

FAQ

Does this manual cover all Kobelco crane models?
It covers tubular code booms – laced bases, boom tips, inserts, and luffing sections. Check your crane’s serial number against the dealer requirements on page 2.
Why is the rod dryer temperature range important?
If you don’t dry the electrodes at 510–600°F before using them, hydrogen from moisture can cause weld cracking. The manual says unused electrodes must go in a rod dryer at that range after opening. Do not store them in a toolbox or leave them on the bench. Moisture absorption happens fast – that’s why the four-hour limit exists. I’ve seen repaired booms fail because someone used a damp rod. This spec is not optional.

Access the Factory Manual and keep a copy in your weld shop. You’ll reference the electrode diameter table, the preheat notes (if any are included – page numbers are for guidance), and the material sourcing instructions. Aftermarket data won’t get you there. Manual Transmission skills don’t transfer to lacing repair. Get the OEM document.
