Ferrari Testarossa Workshop Manual 1984-1991 OEM factory repair book cover

Ferrari Testarossa Workshop Manual – You Need the Real Specs

If you’re about to pull the engine on a Testarossa, or even just check the valve clearance, you don’t want a third-party summary that smooths over the hard parts. I’ve seen guys use aftermarket data and end up with a seized camshaft because the shim thickness was off by 0.05 mm. This is the Ferrari Testarossa Workshop Manual – the exact document the factory handed to their own techs. 557 pages of Italian, English, French, and German. You get the same procedures used in Modena. That matters when you’re torquing connecting rod bolts on a flat-12.

Page 1 shows the cover and the original multi-language title. Page 2 lists every major section: General, Engine, Lubrication and Cooling, Ignition and Injection, Clutch and Gearbox, Steering and Suspension, Torques and Special Tools, Body, Electrical, Controls and Air Conditioning, Brakes. That’s your roadmap. No fluff. Just the factory chapters you need to rebuild a 4.9L Colombo flat-12 correctly.

Engine Assembly: What the Factory Wants You to Know

Group B in the manual covers the entire engine. They start with main specifications – bore, stroke, compression ratio, firing order. Then they walk you through the crankcase and cylinder liners, including how to check main bearing alignment and reassemble the wet liners. The crankshaft section gives you the procedure for refacing journals, balancing, and checking bearing clearance. Connecting rods and pistons detail cleaning, checking for ovality, and piston ring end gaps. The cylinder heads get their own deep dive: checking for warpage, valve seat erosion, and spring tension. Every spec is listed in metric and converted to Imperial where applicable.

One thing I respect about this manual: they don’t skip the hydraulic test after reassembling the engine (page reference in the Engine Assembling section). You pressurize the oil galleries to verify seal integrity before you drop the flat-12 back in the chassis. That’s the kind of step aftermarket guides omit because they assume you’ll ‘just know.’ You won’t. Use the factory procedure.

Crankshaft and Cylinder Liners: Checking Clearances

Section 2.2 (Albero motore / Crankshaft) includes the main journal and crankpin refacing limits. The manual tells you the maximum undersize allowed and the specific Plastigage technique for measuring clearance. For the cylinder liners, they want you to check the liner protrusion above the crankcase deck with a dial gauge. That protrusion must be within 0.03-0.08 mm. I’ve seen liners shift because a tech used the wrong sealant. The manual calls out the correct sealing compound and the tightening sequence for the main bearing caps. They even list the torque in Nm and lb-ft – 44 lb-ft for the main bearing bolts, for example. Don’t guess.

Timing System: Camshafts and Belts

The timing system chapter (Distribuzione / Timing system) covers adjusting shim clearance and boring the camshaft seats if needed. It also walks you through the timing belt replacement – critical on any interference engine. The Testarossa uses two belts driving each bank. The manual shows the alignment marks and the correct tensioning procedure using a special tool (part number listed in Section M). You’ll find the belt tension specification and the recommended replacement interval. Run a belt out of spec and you’re looking at bent valves on both banks. Not a cheap fix.

Torque Specs and Special Tools (Section M)

Section M (Attrezzatura – Coppie di serraggio / Torques – Chassis – Special tools) is the dedicated torque table and tool list. Every fastener from the oil pan bolts to the flywheel bolts has a torque value. They also list the Ferrari-specific tools like the crankshaft pulley holder, the camshaft locking tool, and the clutch alignment mandrel. If you don’t have the right tool, the manual tells you the alternative (if one exists). I’ve used this section to order parts from my Snap-on dealer without guessing. The torque table alone is worth the price of admission.

Why the OEM Manual Beats Aftermarket

Aftermarket manuals rephrase and condense. They leave out the hydraulic test procedure, the exact Plastigage interpretation, and the multi-language diagrams that clarify which part is which. This is a straight reprint of the Ferrari factory document. You see the same notes they wrote for their own mechanics – warnings like “Do not reuse aluminum washers” and “Apply Loctite 242 to these bolts.” You also get the full wiring diagrams (Section I) with all connector pinouts, not a simplified version. When you’re chasing an electrical gremlin in a 30-year-old Italian harness, you need the real schematic.

I’ve used this manual on three Testarossa engine-outs. It’s saved me hours because I don’t have to check which torque spec applies to the early or late production. The manual covers 1984 through 1991 – every variant. And because it’s a PDF, you can search for keywords like “oil pump” and go straight to the page.

Is the manual in English?
Yes. The PDF contains Italian, English, French, and German. You can read the English sections directly.
Does it cover the 512 TR?
The Testarossa manual (84-91) covers the specific models produced in that window. The 512 TR was introduced in 1992 and has a different manual. However, many engine and chassis procedures carry over. If you need the 512 TR data, get the dedicated 512 TR manual. You will find it under our Ferrari listings.

You can access the factory manual in PDF format right now. No waiting for shipping, no faded photocopies. Access the Factory Manual and keep it on your tablet or laptop in the shop. I promise you it’s the last repair manual you’ll buy for this car.
