Dana Spicer 1000, 1880 2006 Service Manual

Dana Spicer 1000-1880 service manual cover 2006

If you are working on a driveline from the Dana Spicer 1000, 1880 2006 Service Manual, you already know that guessing torque values can turn a driveshaft rebuild into a scrap pile. I have seen it happen. A tech in a hurry strips a midship nut because he relied on a third-party spec sheet. That mistake costs time and parts. This factory manual – 32 pages of original OEM data – eliminates that risk.

Every page in this 2006 publication comes straight from Spicer engineering. The grease zerk torque on page 26? That is the number the factory uses, not a generic value from a forum. The lubrication intervals on page 11? Those apply specifically to the 1000 and 1880 series, not some universal chart. When you follow these numbers, you keep the driveline safe and the bearings filled with the right grease.

Safety First: Driveline and Component Hazards

Safety starts on page 1 with general safety warnings about rotating components. Page 2 breaks down each component – driveline, end fitting, universal joint, slip member, yoke, tubing, midship nut, center bearing – and tells you what can go wrong. Foreign material contamination is covered on page 3. Hardware reuse warnings are also there. Ignoring these recommendations can lead to a driveshaft separating at highway speed. That is not a risk you take when OEM documentation is on your bench.

One word about aftermarket manuals: they leave out these sections. They skip the part about checking for wear on the Quick Disconnect end yoke. Then a DIYer puts in a new U-joint and still has vibration because the yoke bore is out of round. This manual catches that.

Does This Manual Cover the Midship Nut Torque Specs?

Yes. The Midship Nut Specifications Table is part of the Center Bearing Assembly procedures on page 22. You get the exact torque for the 1000 and 1880 series, plus the installation procedure on page 24. I have seen shops over-tighten that nut and deform the rubber isolator. Then the center bearing fails in 5,000 miles. The factory table prevents that. If you are swapping a center bearing on an 1880 series shaft, you need that data.

32 Pages of Factory Data – No Reprints

This is 32 pages of original OEM content, not a scanned copy of a copy. The table of contents lists every section: Safety, Inspection, Lubrication, Disassembly and Reassembly, Glossary. Each section gives step-by-step procedures that a shop can follow verbatim. Inspection covers end fitting, bearing plate yoke, Quick Disconnect end yoke, universal joint, slip member, tubing, center bearings, and midship end fitting. Lubrication includes Spicer 10 Series intervals, grease compatibility, and procedures for Quick Disconnect, bearing plate, and snap ring styles. Disassembly and reassembly walks through snap ring, bearing plate, inboard slip, and outboard slip designs.

Follow the Factory Reassembly Sequence for Bearing Plates

Page 18 gives the disassembly and reassembly for bearing plate style universal joints. The sequence matters: remove the bearing plate bolts, tap the caps out, inspect the bearings, then reverse. If you put the caps in at the wrong angle, you damage the needle rollers. I have watched a new mechanic do that and then wonder why the joint feels rough. Page 26 also lists the torque for the grease zerk fittings and plugs – 20-25 ft-lbs for the plug, 10-15 ft-lbs for the zerk. Those numbers are not in the generic manuals.

If your project involves a manual transmission, check out Manual Transmission specifications for driveline angles.

Grease Zerk Torque: Why Page 26 Matters

Page 26 includes the Universal Joint Grease Zerk (Nipple) Fitting and Plug Torque table. This is a small but critical spec. If you over-torque the zerk, you crack the cap and lose grease. Under-torque and it backs out while driving. The factory value is 10-15 ft-lbs for the zerk, 20-25 ft-lbs for the plug. Write that on a sticky note and put it on your grease gun.

The lubrication section also covers center bearing grease zerks, shown on page 24. Use the recommended lubricants: EP lithium-based NLGI #2 grease. Do not mix greases – page 12 covers compatibility. Follow the interval chart on page 11: every 3,000 miles for severe duty, 6,000 for normal. That keeps the bearings alive.

What types of universal joints does this manual cover?
Snap ring, bearing plate, and Quick Disconnect styles.
Can I use this manual for the Dana Spicer 1880 series driveshaft?
Yes. This 2006 service manual covers both the 1000 and 1880 series, including disassembly and reassembly procedures for both, lubrication intervals specific to each series, and the midship nut torque table on page 22. The inspection criteria for end fittings, yokes, and slip members apply to both series. Aftermarket manuals often omit the exact torque for the 1880 series midship nut, leading to premature bearing failure. This OEM document ensures you get the correct factory numbers for safe operation.

When you have a driveshaft on the bench and need the right numbers, there is only one document to trust. Access the Factory Manual and keep it on your bench.
