Group 2 covers the front suspension – strut, cradle, steering knuckle, control arm, and stabilizer bar. Each component has an exploded view with OEM part numbers and torque callouts. Without those numbers, you’ll set the backlash wrong and destroy the ring and pinion in 5000 miles.
Group 5 is the brake system: front and rear disc brakes, power brake booster, master cylinder, hydraulic control unit, tubes, hoses, pedals, and parking brake assembly. The HCU and tube routing diagrams (Fig. 5-505 and others) are specific to LHD and RHD. Aftermarket diagrams lump them together – that’s how you get a brake tube interference.
Brake System Coverage: From Master Cylinder to Parking Brake
The brake section alone is worth the price of the manual. Fig. 5-205 and Fig. 5-206 show rear disc brake caliper removal and installation with torque specs for the caliper guide pins. I’ve seen DIYers snap those pins because a generic manual said 80 ft-lbs when the factory spec is 45 ft-lbs. The parking brake lever and cables section (Fig. 5-705) includes cable adjustment procedures – critical for the rear disc park brake assembly.
Why Aftermarket Manuals Fail the Real Test
I’ve been torquing head bolts since before some of you were born. Aftermarket manuals are fine for oil change intervals, but for complex systems like the 2008 Sprinter’s electrical and cooling, you need the OEM document. If you’re diagnosing a no-start, you need to know which fuse block supplies the starter relay. Aftermarket manuals often show one generic fuse box diagram for all years. Front Suspension: Strut, Cradle, and Stabilizer Bar
The front stabilizer bar section (Group 2-200) covers the bar, bushings, and links for FWD/RWD/AWD. Fig. 2-205 and 2-206 show the exact routing of the bar and the torque for the bracket bolts. I’ve replaced stabilizer links on these vans – the factory spec for the link nut is 55 ft-lbs. A generic manual might say 40-60, but that range is useless. The factory spec is 55 ft-lbs, no argument.
- Does this manual cover both diesel and gasoline engines?
- Yes. Page 1 lists engine codes for 3.0L diesel and 3.5L gasoline.
- What torque values are listed for the front strut?
- Torque values aren’t listed in the table of contents excerpt, but factory manuals include them in figure callouts. For example, Fig. 2-105 shows the front suspension assembly with fastener torque specs in the notes. You need the manual to see those numbers. Without it, you risk over-torquing strut rod nuts or under-torquing control arm bolts. I’ve seen stripped threads on a 2008 Sprinter from using a generic spec.
