Cylinder Head and Valve Train Coverage

Section 2.1 on page 10 walks you through cylinder head removal, inspection, and installation. The manual gives you the tightening sequence and the torque values in both Nm and lb-ft. No “tighten to feel” garbage – you get step angles and final torque that the factory validated. If you skip the sequence, you’ll warp the head. I’ve had guys bring me engines after following a Chilton’s book – they had to buy a new head.

What About Fuel Timing?

Fuel timing on these Cummins diesels is picky. Section 2.6 covers it on page 29. You’ll find the static timing procedure and the dynamic timing check using a timing pin and dial indicator. Check the Torque Specs Before You Wrench

Page 44 – Threads / Recommended Torque – lists every critical fastener on the engine: main bearing cap bolts, connecting rod nuts, flywheel bolts, cylinder head bolts, fuel injector hold-downs. The manual uses a torque-angle method where needed. You need a good torque wrench that clicks at the right value, and a protractor for the angle. A beam-type wrench works if you’re careful. Don’t use a cheap clicker that’s never been calibrated. I’ve seen those fail on rod bolts – the engine lets go at 4000 RPM and you’re buying a short block.

Cooling System: What the Manual Tells You

Section 2.8 on page 36 covers the cooling system – water pump, thermostat, and coolant flow. It gives you the thermostat opening temperature and the pressure cap rating. For these industrial engines, overheating warps the head and cracks the liners. The manual includes the bleed procedure to avoid air pockets. That matters because an air pocket in the block can cause a hot spot that lifts the cylinder liner seal. Then you get coolant in the oil. Then you get bearings that look like they were sandblasted.

Who This Manual Fits

Home garage guys who are rebuilding a Cummins-powered generator or pump engine will get the most value. You need basic mechanical skills – read a micrometer, use a dial bore gauge, own a torque wrench. This 69-page manual won’t teach you how to use those tools, but it will tell you exactly what numbers to hit. If you’re a pro mechanic, this is the reference you keep on the workbench for quick checks. You can trust the factory data.

Source Authenticity – OEM vs. Aftermarket

Every page of this PDF is a scan of the original Cummins workshop manual released in 2010. The part number is A030D087 (Issue 3). Aftermarket manuals rewrite the steps and often change the torque values to match a generic standard. That is dangerous. I’ve compared a third-party manual for a Cummins N14 to the OEM book – they had the main bearing torque off by 25 ft-lb. That much difference will move the bearing shell. Use only the factory print. This is the factory print.

Does this manual include the fuel injection pump removal procedure?
Yes, section 1 in the sub-assembly chapter covers it.
Is the 69-page manual sufficient for a full engine overhaul?
It covers the base engine components, torque specs, cooling, fuel system, and timing. For a complete overhaul you’ll also need the factory service bulletin updates for that specific application (generator set vs. pump drive). The manual gives you the mechanical rebuilding steps, but if your engine has electronic controls (some export models), you’ll need the separate electrical diagnostic manual. For the rotating assembly and cylinder head work, this is all you need.
