Description

Cummins Turbo Technologies HE341Ve, HE351Ve, HE431Ve/451Ve, HE531Ve, HE551Ve 2009 Service Manual

You have a HE351Ve on the bench that came off a 6.7L that had the actuator arm bent. The actuator itself is fine, but you need the locknut torque for the compressor wheel before you button it up. You pull a generic PDF off the internet and it says “tighten to spec” — not helpful. This is the exact frustration that leads to stripped threads, thrown wheels, and comebacks. This 15-page OEM Cummins Turbo Technologies HE341Ve, HE351Ve, HE431Ve/451Ve, HE531Ve, HE551Ve 2009 Service Manual gives you the actual numbers from Cummins Turbo Technologies Ltd. Not a third-party reprint. Not a guess.

Cummins Turbo Technologies HE341Ve service repair manual 2009 15 pages factory data sheet

Torque Specs That Come Straight from the Factory

The data sheet lists locknut torques for compressor and V-band clamps across all five models. Page 1: locknut, compressor wheel (Item 61) for the HE351Ve requires 14 Nm (124 lb in). For the HE531Ve it’s 21 Nm (186 lb in). Diffuser screw (Item 56) on the HE341Ve is 6.8 Nm (60 lb in). These are not suggestions. You exceed 21 Nm on that HE531Ve locknut and you risk crushing the shaft shoulder. Miss it low and the wheel walks in high boost. The manual also gives torque in both Nm and lb in — imperial units as specified for North America. No unit conversion needed.

Balance Limits: What the Manual Tells You That Aftermarket Docs Omit

Page 2 covers rotor balance and core balance at 4000 rev/min. The HE431Ve/451Ve calls for 2.2 g.mm (0.0030 oz in) on the rotor balance and 4.4 g.mm (0.0060 oz in) on the core balance. Balance plane data is also provided. Without these numbers you’re balancing blind. I’ve seen shops rebalance a turbo using specs from a different series and they end up with a vibration that eats the bearings in 500 miles. The OEM data prevents that.

7 VGT Models Covered in 15 Pages

This service data sheet covers HE341Ve, HE351Ve, HE431Ve/451Ve, HE531Ve, HE551Ve — plus the non-Ve variants HE431V/451V, HE531V, HE541V, HE551V, and even HX40V, HY40V, HX55V, HY55V. Each model has its own column in the torque and balance tables. The document is dated 2009 with expiry date 05:2010, meaning the data was current through that service cycle. Part number 4029697 Rev. 08. That Rev. number matters — earlier revisions may lack later service notes.

Safety Warnings You Ignore at Your Own Risk

The manual includes a full CAUTION box on every page: “Always refer to Service Notes before using this service data.” And a WARNING that states “Turbochargers can be hazardous when not used as specified by the manufacturer.” It lists six specific rules: use only engine-manufacturer-approved part numbers, don’t touch hot surfaces, never work on a running turbo, don’t modify the unit, disassemble per engine manufacturer instructions, use only approved spare parts. That last one is why I tell people to check the actuator part number against Cummins’ application list before swapping a HE351Ve into a truck it wasn’t spec’d for.

Who Needs This Manual and Why

If you are a tech rebuilding a VGT turbo in a shop, or a home garage mechanic pulling a Holset off a Dodge Cummins and trying to reseal it, this data sheet is the only document that gives you the locknut torque and balance specs in one place. The OEM source eliminates the guesswork. I have a stack of aftermarket “service data” from parts stores that list generic torque values like “12-15 Nm” without model differentiation. That’s how you ruin a HE551Ve actuator housing. This manual is 15 pages, but every page has a purpose. It also cross-references VGT service data for the Command Valve and Super MWE trademarks.

FAQ

Does this service manual include wiring diagrams or actuator calibration?
No. It is a service data sheet — torque specs, balance limits, part numbers. Actuator calibration procedures are in the engine manufacturer’s service manual.
Why are there N/A entries in the torque table for some models?
Because certain components (e.g., screw diffuser on the HE341Ve) are not serviceable or require replacement rather than individual torque. The OEM marked those fields N/A deliberately. Do not assume a torque value from another model cell — use the N/A as a stop sign. I have seen technicians apply the HE351Ve locknut torque to a HE341Ve locknut because they skipped the column check. The HE341Ve locknut takes 14 Nm, not 8.5 Nm. Check every cell.

Don’t rebuild a VGT turbo without the factory numbers. The difference between a 14 Nm torque and a 17 Nm torque is a few foot-pounds on the wrench, but it determines whether the compressor wheel stays put at 150,000 rpm. Access the Factory Manual now and keep it with the turbo on the bench.
