If you’re pulling a Cummins QSB, ISB Service Manual job apart and relying on a generic internet guide, you’re setting yourself up for a comeback. I’ve seen it too many times – a cylinder head gasket job that turns into a warped block because someone guessed the torque sequence. This 910-page factory manual from Cummins cuts the guesswork. Engine Disassembly and Assembly – Group 00 Procedures

The manual breaks down every step you need for pulling this engine apart and putting it back together. Section DS covers Engine Disassembly – Group 00, and section AS covers Engine Assembly – Group 00. Each procedure lists the required tools, including special service tools like the Cummins cylinder liner puller. The manual also tells you the correct order to tighten the rocker lever bracket bolts – center out, in two steps. Group 04 covers cam followers (tappets) – removal, inspection for pitting, and the flatness requirement for the contact face. If you reuse a pitted follower, you’ll wipe out the cam lobe in 500 hours. Replace the tappets in pairs. Plain as that.
