Engine Disassembly and Assembly: Group 00

Factory work starts with Group 00. You get the full teardown and rebuild sequence – not a summary, not a “typical” procedure. It tells you which special tools are required and when to use them. A lot of aftermarket manuals skip the assembly order for the internal damper models. This one doesn’t. It walks you through the whole thing, from removing the flywheel housing to torquing the main bearing caps. Every step is there because it came off the Cummins engineering line.

Fuel System and Injectors: Groups 05 and 06

L10 fuel systems are finicky. If you get the injection timing off by even a degree, you’ll have a smoke-belching mess that won’t pass a dyno test. Group 05 covers the complete Fuel system – transfer pump, PT pump, governor, and all the adjustment specs. Group 06 details injectors and fuel lines, including the test pressures and leak-off rates. Skip Group 06 and you’ll be pulling the valve cover again. Page 2 shows the copyright and bulletin number – this manual was printed 7/94, so it’s the late-model L10 with all the production updates.

Cooling and Lubrication Systems: Groups 07 and 08

Overheating an L10 warps the head. Factory repair requires specific coolant flow checks and water pump clearance specs. Group 08 – Cooling system – gives you the pump removal, thermostat testing, and radiator cap pressure values. Group 07 covers the Lubricating Oil System: oil pump gear backlash, relief valve settings, and filter head torque. Don’t trust a generic oil pressure spec. This manual gives you the exact range for the L10 at operating temperature.

What About the Cylinder Block and Head?

Group 01 (Cylinder Block) and Group 02 (Cylinder Head) cover the heart of the engine. Bore limits, liner protrusion, head flatness, valve guide wear – all measured in thousandths of an inch. The head bolt sequence and torque values are in Group 18 (Specifications). You don’t guess. You follow the pattern. There’s also a section on crack inspection and repair limits. If you’re doing an in-frame overhaul, you need these groups open on the bench.

Factory spec data includes the exact torque angles for the connecting rods and main bearing caps. That information is not in aftermarket reprints.

Aftermarket manuals rephrase the factory steps and often drop critical notes. Here’s why the OEM binder wins: first, the wiring diagrams and component locations match the actual harness routing because they were drawn from production engines. Second, the Electrical equipment breakdown in Group 13 includes the starter, alternator, and all sensors with the correct pinouts. Third, the service literature section lists official Cummins bulletins that supercede older procedures. You get the current info, not a copy of a copy.

When you get into Engine testing (Group 14), you need to disconnect the Manual Transmission from the flywheel housing before you spin the engine on the stand. Yes. Group 05 includes the full PT pump specs, including idle and high-speed pressure settings.
I’m rebuilding my L10 for a bus application. Will I need additional manuals for the accessory drives and air equipment?
This manual includes Group 12 (Air Equipment) and Group 16 (Mounting Adaptions) that cover alternator brackets, air compressor drives, and PTO mounts. For bus-specific body wiring, you’ll want the chassis electrical manual, but for the engine itself – including the air compressor, fan drive, and all mounting – it’s all in these 558 pages. The accessory drive belt tension specs and air compressor oil line routing are in Group 12. If your engine has a Holset HX60 or similar turbo, the exhaust system section in Group 11 includes the torque for the turbine housing bolts. You won’t find that in a generic diesel book.
