Description
CNH 721D 2004 Repair Manual – Factory Specs for Loader Maintenance

I’ve been wrenching on heavy equipment for 28 years. The number of times I’ve seen a loader come into my shop with stripped threads in the steering cylinder mount because someone used a generic torque chart – it’s too many. That’s why when you need to pull a radiator or adjust the transmission pressures, you don’t want an aftermarket reprint. You want the factory manual that CNH issued in May 2004. This is it: 762 pages of the same documentation our dealership techs had. No paraphrasing, no guesswork. It covers the 721D loader from front bumper to rear axle. The CNH 721D 2004 Repair Manual is what I keep on my workbench when a 721D comes in with a hydraulic leak or an electrical fault.
That table saves you from guessing.
Torque Specs and Fluid Capacities
Section 1001 lays out the general torque specifications. You’ll find the factory values for every fastener on the machine. Section 1002 covers lubrication intervals, filter part numbers, and fluid capacities – engine oil, transmission, hydraulic tank. Section 1003 gives conversion factors so you can switch between Imperial and metric if you have to. There’s even a Loctite product table so you know which thread locker to use on injector hold-downs versus steering arm bolts. I’ve used this table to avoid comebacks. You should too.
Electrical Systems: Factory Wiring and Diagnosis
The Electrical section (Section 4) is the one that saves you hours of chasing shorts. It starts with removal and installation of the starter and alternator (4001). Then diagnostic specs and troubleshooting (4002). If you’ve ever had a no-start on a 721D that turned out to be a corroded ground at the battery (Section 4003), you’ll appreciate the step-by-step for battery testing. The information center and diagnostic unit (4005) is covered – that’s the control unit that gives you error codes. Without this manual, you’re guessing which pin to probe. With it, you’ve got the exact voltage and resistance readings. Section 4002 includes a full troubleshooting chart for charging system faults.
Does This Manual Cover the Transmission?
Yes, and then some. Section 6 – Tren de Potencia in the Spanish original but translated as Powertrain – covers transmission removal and installation (6001), pressure test specs and troubleshooting (6002), transmission overhaul (6003), front and rear axles (6004), driveshafts and U-joints (6005), wheels and tires (6006), and the shift control distributor (6007). If you’re rebuilding the transmission, you need the pressure specs from 6002. I’ve done two 721D transmission swaps using this manual. The torque converter stall test procedure is in Section 2002 – Prueba de Calado. That’s the stall test. If you skip that test before a teardown, you might replace a good transmission.
Understand the Hydraulic System Before You Open a Line
Hydraulics (Section 8) is where most DIYers get into trouble. Section 8001 covers component removal and installation. Section 8002 gives you the system pressure specs and troubleshooting. Section 8003 is the hydraulic system cleaning procedure – critical if you’ve had a pump failure. Section 8005 covers the hydraulic distributor (control valve), 8006 the cylinders, 8007 the quick-coupler solenoid valve, 8013 the pilot pressure and travel control accumulators, and 8014 the travel control valve. Section 8013 includes accumulator pre-charge pressures. If you don’t check accumulator charge before diagnosing a slow boom response, you’re wasting time. The manual tells you exactly how to test and recharge.
Brake Accumulator Service: Factory Procedure
Brakes (Section 7) – not something to cut corners on. Section 7001 covers brake component removal and installation. Section 7002 is a hydraulic brake troubleshooting chart – includes the exact pressure readings at each test port. Section 7004 covers accumulators: the brake accumulators must be charged to the correct nitrogen pressure. I’ve seen a machine lose brakes because someone used a shop compressor instead of a nitrogen bottle. The manual states the required pressures. Section 7008 covers the parking brake – adjustment and service. If you’re working on a 721D, you want the factory procedure for the parking brake linkage.
Why OEM Documentation Matters More Than Aftermarket?
Aftermarket manuals often skip the small but critical notes – like the fact that the engine radiator separation procedure (Section 2000) requires you to drain the coolant in a specific order to avoid air pockets. This factory Repair Manual from CNH includes every torque spec, every wiring diagram, every hydraulic schematic. The electrical and hydraulic schematics are folded and stored in a pocket at the back of the manual – not reduced to fit a page. That matters when you’re tracing a wire on a 20-year-old loader. If you want to compare, look at CNH 721D 2004 Service Manual. For more background on how a manual transmission works, see Manual Transmission. If you want to understand the fundamentals of manual transmission design, check Manual Transmission for a primer.
Who Needs This Manual – Real-World Use
If you own a 721D loader and do your own maintenance, you need this. If you run a small equipment repair shop and see CNH loaders, you need this. I had a customer bring in a 721D with a steering issue – the orbitrol (Section 5003) was leaking internally. The manual told me the exact test pressure and flow rate to confirm the diagnosis. Saved him from buying a new orbitrol unnecessarily. That’s the value. For beginners, the safety warnings (like discharging hydraulic accumulators before service) are clearly marked. Always read Section 1001 for torque specs before tightening anything. This manual is also useful for techs who want to cross-reference with other CNH models – such as CNH 430, 440, 440CT 2007 Repair Manual – Factory Specs or CNH CX240B 2008 Repair Manual – Factory Track Removal Specs.
- Are torque values in ft-lb or Nm?
- Both. Section 1001 gives values in both units.
- Can I use this manual for a 721E model?
- No. The 721D is a specific model. The 721E has a different engine and revised hydraulics. Ordering the wrong manual will leave you chasing specs that don’t match. I’ve seen guys try to force fit a 721C manual to a D and end up with wrong transmission shift pressures. Stick to the exact model. For the 721D, this is the correct CNH manual published in 2004. If you need the 721E, look for the appropriate manual.
If you want to work on your 721D with the same information the factory technicians used, Access the Factory Manual. It’s the difference between a repair that holds up and one that comes back leaking in a month.
