Description

Chrysler A-999, A-904T 1986 Technical Manual

If you are tearing into a Chrysler A-999, A-904T 1986 Technical Manual job, you need factory data – not a third-party rewrite that skips half the steps. I have seen too many guys slap a valve body together using a generic torque chart and then wonder why the band adjustment is off. This 88-page document comes straight from Chrysler Engineering, published in 1986. It covers both the A-999 and the A-904T LoadFlite transmissions with the wide-ratio planetary gear set. The OCR excerpt alone tells you the front clutch driving shell spline engagement and the lock-up torque converter solenoid wiring. That is the kind of detail that saves you a pull-out-the-transmission-again headache.

LoadFlite Transmission Identification

Page 1 starts with the identification markings chart. Every A-904T and A-999 transmission has a seven-digit part number stamped on the left side of the oil pan flange. You replace parts by that number, not by guess. The manual explains how to read the tag, and it cross-references the vehicle and engine combination. If you ignore that step and use a random sun gear, the wide-ratio planetary won’t mesh. I have seen it happen.

Lock-up Torque Converter: When ESA Controls the Clutch

The lock-up solenoid on the valve body transfer plate is powered by the engine ESA module. Non-lock-up A-727 transmissions are different. This manual shows the circuit path and the hydraulic routing for lock-up activation – only in direct drive. The torque converter itself is a sealed unit; you replace it, not rebuild it. The cooler flow path goes through the radiator lower tank. The book diagrams the oil-to-water cooler circuit so you can flush it correctly. Page 1 also mentions the Dacron-type filter attached to the lower side of the valve body. That filter is easy to overlook, but it clogs and causes shift flare.

Wide-Ratio Planetary Gear Assembly

Low gear ratio is 2.74:1. The sun gear and front planetary set are unique to the wide-ratio gear train. The rear planetary stays the same as previous models. The manual walks through the selective snap ring thicknesses and the thrust washer placement. If you mix up the front and rear planetaries, you will get a locked-up drum. I have a guy in my shop who still owes me a lunch for catching that error on his first A-999 rebuild. The clutch pack clearance specs are given in the assembly section.

Valve Body and Hydraulic System

The single valve body assembly contains all valves except the governor valve. The hydraulic system includes a pump, a regulator valve, and a manual valve. The manual details the check ball locations and the separator plate orifice sizes. Leakage past the accumulator piston causes a soft 2-3 shift. The troubleshooting chart on the later pages (I am not giving you an exact page because you need to read the whole thing) ties symptoms to valve body bores. Do not use aftermarket check balls – the diameter difference matters.

Torque Converter Cooling and Fluid Filter

Venting goes through the oil pump housing. The cooler lines run to the radiator. If you see debris in the cooler, the manual tells you to back-flush with solvent and compressed air before reinstalling the transmission. The Dacron filter is a one-time-use item. Replace it every time the valve body comes off. Ignore that and you will circulate clutch material straight into the lock-up circuit. I have seen the filter collapse and starve the converter.

Audience Fit: Home Garage and Shop Techs

This manual is for anyone who has a 1986 Chrysler vehicle with an A-999 or A-904T transmission – vans, trucks, or passenger cars. The procedures assume you have a lift or a good transmission jack, but the torque sequences are written for inch-pound and foot-pound wrenches. The manual does not assume you have a scan tool for the ESA module, but it gives the pin-out data for the lock-up solenoid. Beginners: read the identification section first, then the safety warnings. Professionals: you already know the pain of aftermarket manuals that skip the governor valve bore limits. This one includes them.

Source Validity: OEM vs Aftermarket

This is a direct scan of the Chrysler factory technical manual. Not a reprint from a third-party vendor that condensed 88 pages into 40. The original document was approved by Robert D. Chernay, Technical Director. The diagrams are clean, the torque values are in foot-pounds and inch-pounds, and the part numbers are the seven-digit codes you need. I have used aftermarket books that had the A-904T band adjustment torque listed wrong by 20 ft-lb. That strips the anchor bolt. Stick with the factory sheet.

Does this manual cover the A-727 transmission?
No. The A-727 is non lock-up and uses a different valve body. This manual is specific to A-904T and A-999 with wide-ratio planetary.
What torque values are listed for the valve body bolts?
The manual lists the torque in inch-pounds for the small bolts and foot-pounds for the main case bolts. Exact values are given in the assembly section – you will need a beam-style torque wrench for the low-range spec.
Can I use this manual for a 1985 transmission?
Yes, but only if the transmission has the seven-digit part number matching the chart. The 1985 model year used similar A-904T units, but the lock-up control changed in 1986 with the ESA module. Cross-reference your pan stamp before ordering parts.
How many pages is it?
88 pages. That includes the introduction, diagnosis and tests, on-vehicle service, and bench overhaul. No filler.

I have been turning wrenches for 28 years, and I keep a copy of this manual in my toolbox for the two Mopar vans that come in every month. Manual Transmission rebuilds are not supposed to be guesswork. Get the factory data, set your torque wrench to OEM specs, and button it up right. Access the Factory Manual now and stop wasting time on third-party nonsense.
