The 2009 update (page 6) introduced a key change: Maximizing Fuel Economy moved from a recommendation section into a full parameter set. The manual shows you exactly which customer-programmable settings affect fuel consumption. There’s a table on page 7 that breaks down electronic control interactions—how the ECM decides to cut fuel during retarder events, how adaptive cruise changes throttle response. If you’re retrofitting a truck or dialing in a fleet, the 2009 data matters because it adjusts for the J1939 CAN bus architecture that became standard around that time.
Maximizing Fuel Economy: Data-Driven Adjustments
Page 6 lays out the factory approach: set Vehicle Speed Limit (VSL) correctly, use SoftCruise instead of standard cruise, and enable adaptive cruise control (if equipped). The manual gives you the actual OEM coefficients for fuel map adjustments—not some generic “turn this screw” advice. You get the parameter IDs, the allowed range, and the default value. For example, the Low Cruise Control Speed Set Limit (page 36) must be at least 20 mph below the High limit, or the ECM throws a code. Understanding the Electronic Controls
Before you touch any parameter, read the Understanding the Electronic Controls section starting on page 7. It explains how the Engine Control Unit processes inputs from the J1939 data bus, the ABS module, and the transmission. If you skip this, you’ll wonder why changing “Vehicle Speed Calibration” did nothing—because you changed the wrong one. The manual lists three separate calibrations: standard, J1939-Trans, and J1939-ABS (pages 20–23). Each one applies to a different wiring configuration. Factory spec only, no guesswork.
Vehicle Speed Parameters and Calibration
Speed calibration is the most common reason I see a Cat truck running wrong. Page 24 gives the Vehicle Speed Limit table with hard numbers in mph. The Soft Vehicle Speed Limit (page 31) is a customer-programmable under-speed that prevents the engine from hitting the governor during overtaking. If you set it wrong, the truck feels sluggish. The manual also covers Low Speed Range Axle Ratio and High Speed Range Axle Ratio (page 33). Those are two separate values because the truck can shift between ranges. Miss one, and your speedometer reads 10% off.
Cruise Control Parameters: Factory Settings
The cruise control section (pages 34–49) includes the Adaptive Cruise Control Enable parameter—this is not a generic feature. The manual tells you which model years support it (2009 and later) and what the activation voltage needs to be. Engine Retarder Mode (page 38) must be set to match the transmission’s retarder capability. Use the wrong mode, and the retarder either won’t engage or will overheat the brake. The manual includes a table on page 40 linking retarder mode to vehicle speed thresholds.
ECM Identification Parameters
Every ECM has a personality code. Page 18 covers the Vehicle ID parameter—this is the serial number tied to the truck. If that’s wrong, dealer software won’t communicate correctly.
