You know the drill. Customer brings in a D6 with a final drive howling. You pull the planetaries, find spalling on the sun gear, and now you gotta decide: replace or reuse? If you guess wrong, that gear comes back in 500 hours with the carrier trashed. That’s billable time you’re eating, plus the customer’s machine is down again. This isn’t a reprint from some third-party that copied the TOC and called it a day. This is the actual Caterpillar SEBF8078-02 document – Conventional (Non-Planetary) Final Drive Gears for Track Type Tractors and Track Type Loaders. It covers everything from nomenclature (page 2) to cleaning procedures (page 2) all the way down to heat treat specs. Final Drive Gear Failure Modes

Page 3 starts the failure progression section with pitting and spalling, case crushing, and fatigue cracks. The manual breaks each one down with visual descriptions that match what you’ll see under a bright light. Spalling looks different than pitting, and this book tells you why. It also covers the difference between contact fatigue and bending fatigue – critical if you’re trying to figure out why a gear failed prematurely. You get the mechanical reason behind each failure type, not just a picture with a red circle.

What Does the Cleaning Section Cover?

Short answer: how to clean gears before inspection. Page 2 says remove the gears from the machine and clean them in a petroleum based solvent. That’s it – no voodoo. But the manual stresses that dirt and oil mask cracks. I’ve seen techs skip this step and miss a root area crack that later cost a customer a whole axle housing. Don’t be that guy. Clean it, then inspect it.

3 Crack Types You Cannot Ignore

The manual lists fillet cracks, end cracks, tip cracks, root area cracks, contact face cracks, and gear face cracks. Each has a different cause and a different reuse limit. Fillet cracks mean the gear is done – period. End cracks might be salvageable if they’re small and not progressing. You get the criteria on page 19-21 for each one. There’s no “maybe” in this book. It tells you the max allowable length and location. If the crack exceeds it, the part goes in the scrap bin.

Inspect Before You Install

Page 7 covers inspection and reconditioning. The manual lists surface damage types: pitting, corrosion, erosion, spalling, case crushing, surface rippling, scoring, abrasive wear, tooth tip wear, lipping, surface mottling, surface blemishes, nicks, uneven contact, foreign objects, and other damage. For each one there’s a description, a photo reference (though the PDF only has text), and a reuse decision. For example, surface rippling means the gear is borderline but may be reused if below a certain depth. You need to measure it with a micrometer. The manual gives you the numbers.

Surface Damage: Pitting to Spalling

Pitting and spalling are the two most common reasons we scrap final drive gears. Page 3 explains the progression: pitting starts as small craters, then grows into spalling if left unchecked. Caterpillar’s guideline says you can reuse a gear with light pitting if the pits are below 1.5 mm diameter and not clustered. Spalling means the gear surface has popped out in chunks – that’s a hard no for reuse. The manual also covers case crushing (page 5) which happens when the hardened case can’t support the load. That one’s a total loss.

Why OEM Documentation Beats Aftermarket

I’ve seen aftermarket guides that show a picture of a gear with cracks and say “do not reuse” – but they don’t tell you what kind of crack it is or why it formed. This manual gives you the smcs code 4055, the publication date, and the exact Caterpillar engineering data. No guesswork. If you’re a shop that does any work on Caterpillar undercarriage, you need the factory info. Aftermarket manuals are fine for oil change intervals, but for reusable parts decisions, you risk liability. Stick with the OEM print.
