Description
Caterpillar D4H, D5M, D5N, 561M, 561N Technical Manual – Factory Track Service Data

Aftermarket manuals skip torque values. I’ve seen a D5N tension adjuster ruined because some kid used a guess instead of the factory number. That’s a 600-dollar mistake. This Caterpillar D4H, D5M, D5N, 561M, 561N Technical Manual is 826 pages of OEM data straight from the Custom Track Service Handbook, 15th edition. You get the same specs the dealer techs use. If you touch undercarriage on these machines, you need this on the bench.
What This Manual Covers – Undercarriage for D4H, D5M, D5N, 561M, 561N
The manual breaks into eight sections: General Information, Management & Merchandising, Elevated Sprocket Machines, Low Sprocket Machines (including Cat Classic Undercarriage), Hydrostatic Loaders, Excavators, and Paving Products/Drive Belts. The D4H, D5M and D5N fall under Elevated Sprocket Machines on page 110. The 561M and 561N are there too. Those pages give you track link service limits, roller flange wear specs, and sprocket tooth measurements. You’re not flipping through generic diagrams. Every spec is model-specific.
Torque Specs and Wear Limits: Page 110
Page 110 is where the D4H, D5M, D5N, 561M, and 561N get their own tables. Track link measurements, minimum bushing wall thickness, and seal groove dimensions. The torque values for track adjusting and idler bolt patterns are listed here. I’ve seen aftermarket books list torque for a D5H on a D5N page. That gets you a broken bolt. This manual doesn’t mix models. Check the OEM torque before you put a wrench on that adjusting valve.
Does This Manual Include Low Sprocket and Elevated Sprocket Machines?
Yes. The Low Sprocket Machines section covers Cat Classic undercarriage used on older tractors. The Elevated Sprocket section, starting on page 96, covers the D4H, D5M, D5N, 561M, 561N plus other models like D6M and D6N. If you’re working on a 561N pipelayer, that section shows you the carrier roller alignment and idler guard clearance. The OEM procedure for track sag check is in there. No shortcuts. No “approximate” numbers.
3 Reasons to Use OEM Caterpillar Specs Instead of Aftermarket Data
First, aftermarket manuals reprint old numbers. I’ve found torque specs from the 1980s on a 1998 machine. Wrong. Second, factory wear charts on page 27 show percent-worn for links, rollers, and sprockets. Aftermarket books pull a generic chart that doesn’t apply to sealed and lubricated track. Third, the Management & Merchandising section tells you when to do a seal replacement versus a full rebuild. That saves you from pulling a track unnecessarily. If you want to keep the machine undercarriage cost-per-hour low, you use OEM limits.
Read the Management & Merchandising Section Before You Order Parts
Page 74 has the destruction wear limits. That means the part is scrap. Page 75 gives track seal replacement recommendations – it tells you if you can replace seals without swapping the entire cartridge. The CTS Inspection Report on page 76 helps you measure and record wear. I teach my junior guys to fill that out before pulling pins. Without it, you order parts you don’t need. The Total Life Scale on page 81 helps calculate remaining service. Aftermarket docs don’t give you that. OEM does.
One more thing: the General Information section starting on page 3 covers measurement tools and variables. Controllable, non-controllable, and partially controllable. That’s the difference between a track that runs 5,000 hours and one that runs 9,000 hours. Read it.
FAQ
- Is this manual the same as the official Caterpillar Custom Track Service Handbook?
- Yes. It’s the 15th edition, same content.
- Does this manual cover track chain tension specifications for the D5N?
- Page 110 includes track sag specifications for the D5N elevated sprocket. The procedure is listed under Elevated Sprocket Machines – D4H, D5M, D5N, 561M, 561N. You get the measuring point (from the carrier roller flange to the track shoe grouser) and the tension range in inches. The manual also tells you how to adjust the recoil spring preload if the track is too tight. That’s data you won’t find in a generic service guide. You have to use OEM numbers here, because an overtightened track on an elevated sprocket machine causes bushing shelling inside 200 hours. I’ve seen it.
Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals and put it on your tablet. Your technician or you can reference the Manual Transmission section if you run into drivetrain issues, but for undercarriage, this is the only book you need.
