Description
Caterpillar 322C, 322C L 2004 Technical Manual
If you are tearing into a Caterpillar 322C, 322C L 2004 Technical Manual for the 322C or 322C L excavator without the factory print, you are working blind. I have seen more than one guy guess a torque spec on a boom cylinder and end up with a leak that costs a full day of rework. This Caterpillar document is 1,014 pages of what you need to keep that machine running. Not a reprint. Not some third-party compilation. Original OEM print from 2004.

Engine Hood and Cooling System (Sections B and C)
Section B covers the engine hood – hinge points, latch alignment, and how it seals against the cab. Section C gets into the radiator and oil cooler stack. You will find the fan drive belt part numbers and the procedure to replace the water pump V-belt (page 44 in the replacement items). If you skip the coolant drain steps and try to pull the radiator, you will crack the bottom tank. This manual shows you the sequence.
How Does This Manual Handle the Hydraulic System?
Hydraulic troubleshooting is where most DIY guys lose hours. Section H (Hydraulic Tank) and Section c (Pump) together give you the flow path. The manual includes the charge pressure test point and the procedure for the capsule filter (Section e). Need to rebuild the control valve? Section f, page 452 in the model view. Each line shows the O-ring sizes and the torque for the valve body bolts. Follow it exactly – using a click-type torque wrench that is calibrated within the last year.
7 Sections Cover Undercarriage Components
Sections W through a cover the track, idler, track adjuster, track roller, and carrier roller. If you are replacing a worn track roller, the manual lists the bearing press fit specs and the retaining bolt torque. Undercarriage work is dangerous – the track tension spring can launch if you don’t release the grease properly. The manual has a warning on page 274 for the track adjuster. Read it twice.
Get the Right Torque Specs for Boom and Stick
Boom cylinder (Section O) and stick cylinder (Section Q) are covered separately. The rod end and head end have different torques. Also the link and rod assembly in Section T and U. Do not assume the same bolt size gets the same value – the manual lists them per joint. Use the OEM spec, not a generic chart. That is where reprints cost you money.
Original OEM Documentation: Why Factory Specs Matter
Aftermarket manuals often skip the list of attachments – the 191-5537 additional gear train for auxiliary pump, the 176-2663 air prefilter, the 183-1037 travel alarm. This manual includes every attachment (page numbers in the inner cover). Also you get the serial number breaks (BNY1-99999, BMX1-99999, etc.) so you know exactly which revision applies. I have had a customer show me a reprint that missed the fuel filter change serial number cut-off – wasted $80 on the wrong element. The factory manual does not do that.

If you are also working on a Manual Transmission from a different machine, that’s a separate book – this one is for the excavator’s hydrostatic drive and final drive only. Another reference for manual transmissions: Manual Transmission.
FAQ
- Does this manual cover the 3126 engine removal?
- Yes. Section D (Engine) starts on page 11 in the model view. It includes the mounting bolts, the flyhousing alignment, and the accessory drive belts.
- Are the wiring diagrams included for the cab electronics?
- The manual does not include full electrical schematics – that is a separate electrical schematic manual from Caterpillar. This manual focuses on mechanical disassembly, parts identification, and torque specs. For wire colors (RD, WH, OR) the abbreviation table is on page 2. If you need the entire harness layout, order the electrical supplement.
Bottom line: If you own a 322C or 322C L and you want to stop burning time on guesswork, get the factory data. Access the Factory Manual.
