Description
BMW M3, 328i, 316i, 318i, 320i 1998 Electrical Schematic

You are holding a 577-page factory electrical schematic for the 1998 BMW E36 platform. This is not a reprint or a third-party interpretation. BMW M3, 328i, 316i, 318i, 320i 1998 Electrical Schematic comes straight out of Munich. If you have ever chased a no-start or a parasitic draw using a generic wiring diagram, you know the difference. This manual gives you the exact wire colors, connector pinouts, and ground points that BMW specified for the 1998 model year. I have torqued enough head bolts to know that guessing on electrical work costs you time and money. This document eliminates the guesswork.
Engine Management MS41.0 and DME Systems
Section 1210.17 covers Engine management MS41.0 for the 6-cylinder M52 motor found in the 328i and 323i. For the 4-cylinder M43 (316i, 318i) you get DME M1.7.3 on page 1210.19. The 318is with the M44 engine uses DME M5.2. And the M3 with the S50 B32 gets the MSS50 control unit. Each system has its own complete schematic — not one-size-fits-all. The Digital Motor Electronics sections include the actual pin assignments for the ECU connectors. You need to know which pin supplies the main relay? It is in there. The preheating system (section 1220.0) and alternator (1230.0) are also separated so you don’t have to flip through unrelated pages.
Power Distribution and Ground Locations
Section 0670.0 starts with the power distribution chart. From there you go to the fuse chart (0670.1), power distribution details (0670.2), fuse details (0670.3), and ground distribution (0670.4). Ground points are the number one cause of intermittent electrical problems on these cars. The manual shows exactly where each ground strap connects. If you are chasing a tail light issue or a window that stops working, check the ground first. This manual gives you the ground locations without having to peel back the entire harness. Section 0670.5 covers the diagnostic link — essential if you are trying to connect a scan tool to an older E36.
Transmission Control and SMG Diagnostics
Transmission schematics are broken down by model. The 328i with the A5S 300J gets section 2460.11. The M3 sequential M-transmission (SMG) is in section 2460.12. For diesel models, there are separate EGS sections for the A4S 270R and A5S 310Z. If you have a 318tds or 325td, you need the diesel electronics (DDE 2.1) in sections 1360.2 and 1360.3. I have seen too many shops replace a transmission control module because they used the wrong wiring diagram. This manual eliminates that mistake.
ABS, ASC, and Airbag Schematics
The antilock brake system (ABS) is in section 3450.0. Automatic stability control (ASC) is section 3450.1. The airbag system (AB) is section 3234.0. These are safety-critical systems. If you are replacing a crash sensor or an ABS pump, you need the exact wire routing and connector configuration. The manual also includes the crash and alarm sensor (6350.0). One wrong splice in an airbag circuit can cause non-deployment or false triggering. Factory OEM documentation is the only source I trust for this work.
Central Body Electronics and ZKE IV
Section 6100.0 covers the central body electronics (ZKE IV). This module controls the central locking, power windows, and interior lights. The door lock heating systems (ZKE/TSH and ZVM/TSH) are in sections 5120.0 and 5120.1. For the convertible models, section 5430.1 has the electrical soft top schematic. The electronic immobiliser (EWS II) is section 6135.0. If the car cranks but won’t start, the immobiliser wiring is one of the first things to check. The manual shows the transponder antenna and the DME communication wire.
Component location views (section 7100.0) and connector location views (section 8000.0) help you find the physical parts. Page 1 of the manual includes the index and the introduction with symbol definitions. Page 2 begins the schematics proper. You will find every system listed in the table of contents — from the light switch (6300.0) to the park distance control (6621.0). This is the complete electrical reference for the 1998 E36.

- Does this manual cover the 1998 318ti compact?
- Yes. The 318ti uses the same M44 engine and body electronics as the sedan. The schematics apply.
- Are the wiring diagrams in color?
- The PDF from BMW is in black and white but the wire colors are labeled with text. Track codes like “BR/GE” (brown/yellow) are printed next to each wire. That is standard for these factory drawings.
- What torque values are listed for the cylinder head?
- This is an electrical schematic manual, not a service manual. It does not contain torque specs. For head bolt values you need the BMW service manual from the same year. I recommend BMW 3 Series 1992-1998 Service Manual for that.
- Can I use this for a 1997 E36?
- Not directly. The 1998 model year had changes in the DME software and body module wiring. The pinouts are different. You need the 1997-specific schematic.
If you have a 1998 BMW 3 Series — whether it is a 316i, 318i, 320i, 328i, or M3 — this factory electrical schematic is what you should have on your workbench. No guesswork, no aftermarket shortcuts. The diagrams are organized by system, with connector views and component locations included. I have used OEM schematics for years and I will not touch a car without them. Get this manual and stop wasting hours with generic wiring books. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals.
