Description
BMW 318ti 1995 Electrical Schematic – Factory Wiring Diagrams
I’ve seen more hacked-up wiring on 318tis than I care to remember. Guys chasing a no-start or an ABS fault, pulling out a generic diagram that shows the wrong pinout, then dumping hours into something that should take forty minutes. That’s why you need the actual factory document. This BMW 318ti 1995 Electrical Schematic is the exact same book BMW dealers used. 300 pages, part number 01 00 1 469 081, printed by BMW NA. No aftermarket condensation. No redrawn lines that miss a splice. Just the raw factory data, organized the way BMW engineers laid it out.

BMW 318ti 1995 Electrical Schematic: What’s in the Index
Flip to page 2 and you see the full Table of Contents – 67 sections covering every electrical system on the E36/5 Compact. The index on page 5 lists components by name, from ABS Hydraulic Unit to Back Up Lights. If you need to find the slip control relay, it’s under 3450.0 Slip Control (ABS). The starter circuit? 1240.0 Start. The manual doesn’t hide anything. Every connector, every ground point, every fuse location is cross-referenced by section number. That’s what you get with an OEM book – a logical path from symptom to fix.
Engine Control System (DME M1.7) – 4-Cylinder M42
Section 1210.9 covers the engine management for the 4-cylinder M42. This is the Bosch DME M1.7 system. The schematic shows pin assignments for the ECU, the crank sensor, injectors, and the coil pack. You also get the charging system (1230.0) and the start circuit (1240.0) in separate dedicated diagrams. That means you can isolate a cranking issue without chasing wires through the whole harness. If you’re working on a 1995 318ti with a no-spark condition, start at the DME power feeds on section 0670.2. Don’t guess – trace it.
Slip Control (ABS) and Transmission Wiring
The ABS system on these cars is the Bosch 2S hydraulic unit. Section 3450.0 breaks down the pump motor relay (K75), the ABS relay (K10), and the wheel speed sensor inputs. You also get the electronic transmission control for the A4S 310R automatic – section 2460.2 covers the range switch and shift solenoids. I’ve seen guys replace a transmission because they misread a generic diagram and thought the solenoid resistance was out of spec. Factory specs tell you exactly what ohm reading you should see across pins 1 and 3 of the EGS control unit. That data isn’t in a Chilton or a Haynes. It’s only in this OEM manual.
Why OEM Matters: Factory Part Number 01 00 1 469 081
This is printed by BMW of North America. It’s not a scan of a scan. It’s the real 1995 binder, including the supplement for vehicles produced from 09/94 onward. Aftermarket documentation for the 318ti often lifts diagrams from the 3-series coupe – different body harness, different ground distribution. This manual specifically covers the E36/5 Compact body. The ground distribution chart (0670.4) shows every ground G100 through G501. If you skip using that chart, you’re guessing. And guessing on a BMW ground network will cost you time and maybe a fried module.
Start with Ground Distribution (0670.4)
Before you touch a multimeter, open the manual to section 0670.4. Find the ground point for the component you’re diagnosing. If you’ve got a dead power window, check ZKE central locking (5126.0) and the power windows (5133.0). The manual includes the splice location views in section 8000.0 – those show you exactly where each splice lives in the harness. Without that, you’re cutting tape and hoping. Workshop tip: always verify ground first. Nine times out of ten, that’s the problem.
The manual also covers the supplementary restraint system (3234.0), cruise control (6571.0), anti-theft (6575.2), and the integrated climate control (6450.6). If you need to diagnose a blower motor issue on a 1995 318ti, the schematic for the IHKA control is right there. Same for the heated seats (5203.0) and the power sunroof (5410.1). This is a complete electrical reference for the car.
If you’ve got a 1995 318ti on the lift, access the factory manual before you start probing wires. It will keep you from chasing ghosts. Pair it with the BMW 318ti 1998 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual”>1998 edition if you need later-production updates, or check the BMW 318ti 1997 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual”>1997 and BMW 318ti 1999 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual”>1999 manuals for cross-referencing connector changes. For general electrical theory, see the Automotive Industry Overview”>automotive electrical basics and Automotive Battery”>battery testing guide. But for this specific car, you need the factory print.
- Does this manual cover the cruise control system?
- Yes. Section 6571.0 covers Tempomat.
- I see the manual has 300 pages – is that all schematics or does it include component locations?
- It includes both. The first 200-odd pages are schematics broken down by system, from power distribution to the board computer. Then sections 7000.0 through 8500.0 give you component location charts, actual underhood and interior location views (7100.0), splice location views (8000.0), and connector views (8500.0). So if you need to find the exact connector on the ABS module, you look up the component location view for the engine bay – it’s labeled with the connector number. That saves you pulling the right fender liner for no reason. The 300 pages cover everything electrical on the car, no fluff.
