Description
BMW 318, 323, 328 1999 Troubleshooting Manual

I’ve seen too many techs waste a Saturday on a no-start because they guessed the ground point. This manual is factory-issued, printed 1999, 383 pages of wiring diagrams and component locations for the E36 chassis. It covers the 318is/C, 323is/C, 328is/C, and M3. If you’re working on a 4-cylinder M44 or a 6-cylinder M52, the engine control schematics are in sections 1210.20 and 1210.17. There are no third-party shortcuts here – only the same diagrams BMW dealers used when these cars were new.
BMW 318, 323, 328 1999 Troubleshooting Manual is built from the factory part number 01 00 0 024 248. Every wire color, splice location, and connector pinout matches the as-built vehicle. You won’t find that in a reprint.
Engine Control Systems – MS41.1 and DME M5.2
Section 1210.17 covers the MS41.1 engine control system for the 6-cylinder M52. Section 1210.20 handles the DME M5.2 for the 4-cylinder M44. Each schematic shows every sensor, actuator, and power feed. If you’re chasing a misfire or a no-communication fault, this is where you start. The diagrams include pin numbers at the ECU connector and expected voltage values. No generic pinout guesses.
Charge pressure? Not applicable on these naturally aspirated engines, but the fuel injection and ignition timing paths are fully mapped. You can trace the crankshaft position sensor circuit from the sensor back to the DME without guessing which wire is which.
Transmission Diagnostics for the A4S 270R and A5S 310Z
Two electronic transmission control sections – 2460.2 (EGS A4S 270R) and 2460.4 (EGS A5S 310Z). If the transmission is slipping or stuck in limp mode, these pages show the solenoid resistance values, shift pattern logic, and wiring to the TCM. For a 1999 323i with a flaring 2-3 shift, you can verify the pressure control solenoid circuit at the transmission connector before you drop the pan. That saves fluid, time, and cussing.
Power Distribution, Fuses, and Grounds – Section 0670
Section 0670 starts with a power distribution chart, then breaks into fuse chart (0670.1), power distribution (0670.2), fuse details (0670.3), ground distribution (0670.4), and data link (0670.5). Ground points are a common failure on these cars. The ground distribution diagram shows exactly which body ground (G200, G203, etc.) serves which circuit. No more poking around under the dash with a test light hoping to find a good earth.
Does This Manual Cover Airbags and ABS?
Section 3234.0 covers the supplemental restraint system (air bag). Section 3450.1 covers slip control (ABS/ASC). Both include the diagnostic connector pinout and component locations. If the ABS light is on, you can read the sensor wiring resistance at the module connector without a scope – the manual gives you the factory test procedure. For airbag systems, be careful. The manual includes critical safety warnings about disconnecting the battery and waiting time before working near the crash sensor.
Body Electronics: ZKE IV, Central Locking, and Power Windows
Central body electronics (ZKE IV) in section 6100.0 is the nerve center for door locks (section 5126.0), power windows (section 5133.1), and power mirrors (section 5116.0). When a window stops working but the lock still cycles, the wiring diagram shows the driver’s door module inputs and outputs. The ZKE system can be tricky – this manual lays out the signal paths for the door lock heating (TSH) and the drive-away protection (EWS II) in section 6135.0. If the car cranks but won’t start and the EWS light is flashing, check the immobilizer wiring here.
BMW 318, 323, 328 1999 Troubleshooting Manual: Why OEM Matters
Aftermarket wiring diagrams often re-draw connections or omit splice details. This is the original OEM document – same one BMW issued to dealers in 1999. The connector views in section 8500.0 show the exact cavity numbering and wire colors for every connector on the car. Component location views in section 7100.0 save you from pulling the wrong panel. You don’t get that from a third-party CD.
For earlier E36 models, check the BMW 3 Series 1998 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual. If you have a 1996 model, the BMW 3 Series E36 1996 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual covers that production year. For later models, see the BMW 525i, 318, 323, 325, 520i 2004 Wiring Diagram – OEM Specs.
Factory documentation is the only way to be sure you’re working with the correct circuit. See this Automotive Industry Overview for more on why OEM manuals beat aftermarket reproductions. Automotive Industry Overview also discusses the risks of using generic schematics.
Component Location Views and Connector Diagrams
Section 7000.0 starts the component location chart, then section 7100.0 gives actual location views with photos or line drawings. Section 8000.0 shows splice locations – critical if you’re repairing a broken wire or adding an accessory. Section 8500.0 has connector views with pin assignments. Without these, you’re flying blind.
FAQ
- Can I use this manual for a 1998 E36?
- No. This manual covers 9/98 to 8/99 production only.
- The wiring diagrams look different from the Bentley manual – why?
- Bentley manuals are aftermarket compilations. This is a direct scan of BMW’s own Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, part number 01 00 0 024 248. It shows the exact wire colors, connector pinouts, and splice locations used on the assembly line. If you’ve ever tried to trace a circuit on a 1999 328i and found a discrepancy between the Bentley diagram and the actual car, it’s because aftermarket publishers sometimes simplify or re-draw connections. With this factory manual, you’re looking at the same schematics that BMW trained its dealer techs on. That means every ground point (section 0670.4), every fuse location (section 0670.3), and every control module pin is exactly as the car was built. No guesswork.
If you’re serious about diagnosing your E36 without chasing ghosts, get the real thing. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals and keep it on your tablet next to the car.
