Description
Audi 100 1991 Workshop Manual – OEM Factory Service Specifications

If you’ve ever tried to rebuild a 5-cylinder turbo with a generic aftermarket guide, you know the frustration. Torque values that don’t match, missing tightening sequences, and wiring diagrams that look like someone traced them from a napkin. That’s why the Audi 100 1991 Workshop Manual sits on my bench. It’s the same book the dealer techs used when these cars were new. Factory-issued, 93 pages, covering the AAN engine code – the 2.2L 5-cylinder 4-valve turbo that powers the 1991 Audi 100. No guesswork, just the exact specs VW/Audi signed off on.
Repair Groups Covered: Technical Data Through Exhaust
This manual splits the work into repair groups. You get Technical Data (page 1), then Removing and Installing Engine, Crankshaft Group, Cylinder Head and Valve Gear, Lubrication, Cooling, Fuel Supply, Charging, and Exhaust System. Each section starts with the required safety measures and cleanliness rules. For example, the cylinder head section lists the tightening torques for the head bolts – and the sequence. Skip that step, and you’ll warp the head. I’ve seen it happen. The manual doesn’t let you skip.
Torque Specs and Tightening Sequences – Page 3
Page 3 in the Technical Data section lists the engine code and basic specs. But the real meat is in the individual repair groups. The crankshaft group includes crankshaft dimensions, radial clearance checks, and piston-to-cylinder bore measurements. If you’re rebuilding the bottom end, you need those numbers. The manual gives them in imperial units – millimeters, but you can convert. The tightening torques for the cylinder head are specified in Newton-meters and also in ft-lb equivalents. Don’t trust a third-party database that pulls numbers from a forum. Use the factory page.
Is This Manual for the DIY Home Garage?
Yes, if you’re comfortable with engine work. This isn’t a “change your oil” guide. It assumes you have a repair stand, a torque wrench, and a cooling system pressure tester. The safety measures section (page 2 of the engine removal chapter) tells you to disconnect the battery and drain the coolant before removing the engine. That’s basic, but it’s written because someone forgot and got burned. The manual also covers checking the viscous fan, the turbocharger thermoswitch -F98, and the coolant pump – things a home garage guy might not think about. You don’t need a dealer-level scan tool for most of this, but you do need the factory data.
Source Validity: OEM vs Aftermarket Documentation
Aftermarket manuals reprint the same diagrams from 1985 and slap a 1991 cover on it. Not this one. This is a genuine Audi Volkswagen AG publication printed in Germany in July 1991. The part number is 000.5261.29.20. The copyright says “passing on to third parties is not permitted” – meaning it was meant for the dealer network. That’s the level of detail you get. Compare that to a generic manual that tells you to “tighten until snug.” The Audi 100 1997 Wiring Diagram is also an OEM document, but for the later model. For the 1991, you need the original. The Audi 100 200 1983 1984 Workshop Manual covers earlier years with different engines – don’t mix them up. If you have a 1993 model, the Audi 100, 100 CS 1993 Wiring Diagram – Factory OEM Specs is your match.
What You Need Before You Start: Required Tools and Safety Steps
The manual lists safety measures in the Removing and Installing Engine section. You need a hoist, a repair stand, and the correct tools for the ribbed belt and toothed belt. The coolant system check requires a pressure tester for the cap and the turbo thermoswitch. The manual doesn’t assume you own these; it tells you what to use. If you’re missing a tool, don’t improvise. That’s how you strip a bolt on the oil pump. The Automotive Industry Overview sites remind you that consistent torque is critical for turbo engines. And for background on how these specs are developed, the Automotive Industry Overview on Wikipedia covers the engineering standards behind OEM torque values.
- Does this manual cover the fuel injection system?
- Yes, Repair Group 20 covers the Fuel Supply System, including the injection components for the AAN engine. It includes removal and installation steps, but not internal rebuilding of the injection pump – that’s a different manual.
- Are the torque values in foot-pounds?
- The manual gives most torques in Newton-meters. You convert. A table on page 3 shows engine code specs. That page alone is worth the price if you’ve ever used a bad aftermarket torque chart.
I’ve been turning wrenches since before the 100 was new. When I see a car come in with a stripped head bolt because someone used a “universal” torque spec, I charge double. You avoid that by using the factory numbers. The 93-page Audi 100 1991 Workshop Manual is the original. Access the Factory Manual and keep it on your tablet next to the lift. That’s what I do.
