If you’re tearing into a ZF 6-speed automatic from an Audi and you don’t have the factory Training Manual, you’re working blind. I’ve seen guys swap valve bodies on a 09L only to find the shift pattern’s wrong because they used a generic aftermarket chart. That costs time and money. The table of contents reads like a transmission autopsy log: specifications, torque converters, lockup clutch, ATF pump, cooling system, gear-shifting components, dynamic pressure equalisation, planetary gearbox, shift logic, mechatronics, and interfaces. Every gearbox variant gets its own notes. The 0AT is exclusive to the Q7 with 3.6 FSI from model year ’07. The 0B6 is on the A4/A5 B8 and US-spec Q5. The 0BQ is on the Q7 from ’09. The 09L covers A4 B6/B7, A6 C6, and A8 D3. The 09E started on the A8 ’03 and later found its way into the S6 and RS6. This manual lays out the differences so you don’t mix torque converter part numbers or mechatronics calibrations.

Specifications and Torque Data (Page 8)

Page 8 holds the basic specs – fluid capacities, gear ratios, and weight. But the critical torque values for assembly are scattered through the gearbox sections. Valve body bolts on the mechatronics unit? Look at the hydraulic control unit section. Torque converter bolts? That’s in the torque converter section referencing SSP 283. Don’t use a generic chart. This manual gives factory numbers for the 09E, 09L, 0AT, 0B6, and 0BQ. If you’re rebuilding, you need the correct torque for the ATF pump housing and the mechatronics mounting points. No guesswork allowed.

Shift Logic and Dynamic Pressure Equalisation (Page 48, 50)

The overlap shift control and dynamic pressure equalisation are what make these transmissions shift smooth when they’re right, and bang when they’re wrong. Page 48 explains how the mechatronics modulates pressure during a shift. Page 50 covers the equalisation circuit that prevents clutch slip. If you don’t understand that, you’ll be chasing shift flare for days. The manual also covers the torque curve and four-wheel drive interface – page 67 has the torque curve for the 0B6. Pay attention to the descriptions of gears starting page 56; they tell you which clutches and brakes are applied in each gear. That’s the difference between a proper rebuild and a paperweight.

Mechatronics: Diagnosing the Control Unit J217 (Page 13)

The mechatronics unit is the brain. Page 13 of SSP 284 – which this manual references extensively – covers the control unit J217, temperature monitoring, and oil temperature curves. If you’ve got a fault code for G93 (ATF temperature sender), you need to understand the monitoring logic described there. Temperature spikes can kill a mechatronics unit. This manual also covers electrostatic discharge precautions on SSP 284 page 6; you can fry a mechatronics board just by touching the wrong pin with static on your sleeve. The hydraulic control unit description on SSP 284 page 8 shows the valve body layout and the function of each valve. If you’re chasing a pressure fault, that section is your wiring diagram for oil.

3 Systems You Must Understand Before Assembly

First: the ATF cooling system. The oil supply to the torque converter and the cooler circuit are covered in the gearbox-related sections. If you swap a cooler line without verifying the flow direction, you’ll starve the converter. Second: the dynamic pressure equalisation – page 50 again – prevents clutch drag. Third: the CAN information exchange on SSP 284 page 28. Engine torque control, reversing light, kick-down, accelerator position – all the signals the mechatronics uses to decide when to shift. If you’re swapping this transmission into a different chassis, you need that interface data. This manual gives it.

Why This Training Manual Beats Aftermarket Copies

Aftermarket manuals copy specs but leave out the theory. This one tells you why the lockup clutch operates the way it does, how the ATF pump is driven, and what happens in limp-home mode. It references SSP 283 and 284 for deeper dives into the torque converter and mechatronics. The diagrams are factory – not redrawn. You can trust the oil flow paths. I’ve compared copies to OEM. The difference is night and day. If you want to do this job right, get the original.

Does this manual cover the 09E gearbox?
Yes, it includes modifications and new features added to the 09E gearbox since launch. The 09E is described in detail in SSP 283 and 284, and this manual builds on that.
What torque specs are listed?
The manual provides torque values for valve body bolts, mechatronics unit fasteners, torque converter bolts, and other critical connections on page 8 and in the gearbox-specific sections. Always cross-reference with the relevant section for your variant.
Is this a repair manual or training manual?
It’s a Self-Study Programme (SSP 385) used by Audi technicians to understand the design and function of these transmissions. It’s not a step-by-step repair manual for pulling the transmission, but it gives you the theory, shift logic, hydraulic circuits, and mechatronics diagnostics you need to troubleshoot effectively. If you pair it with a factory repair manual, you’ll have the complete picture. For example, the limp-home programs on page 34 of SSP 284 explain exactly which actuators fail and what the transmission does. That’s diagnostic gold.
Can I use this for the 0BQ gearbox?
Yes, the 0BQ is covered with its own notes and specifications for model year 2009 and later. The 0BQ shares many components with the 0AT but has unique calibrations.
