Description

ATRA 440-T4, AXOD, A4LD 1990 Technical Manual

1990 ATRA Technical Manual - 440-T4, AXOD, A4LD transmission diagnostic cover

You have a 440-T4 on the bench that slips on the 1-2 shift. Or an AXOD that clunks every time it hits a 2-1 downshift. Or an A4LD with no fourth gear. Without a real diagnostic tree, you’re chasing parts instead of fixing the problem. That costs you billable hours and makes comebacks. This 1990 ATRA seminar manual – the ATRA 440-T4, AXOD, A4LD 1990 Technical Manual – was written by transmission rebuilders for transmission rebuilders. Every section is keyed to a specific complaint, with step-by-step pressure checks, valve body tests, and electrical diagnostics. 188 pages, original ATRA print, not a reprint or a scanned copy from some third-party site.

440-T4: 1-2 Slip Or Chatter Section

First section in the manual. If your 440-T4 is slipping or chattering on the 1-2 upshift, the manual walks you through the hydraulic circuit. It lists the parts that cause that symptom – worn pistons, broken springs, incorrect clearances. The diagnostic starts on page 1 of the 440-T4 chapter. There is no guesswork. You check line pressure at the right port, compare it to the spec, and then inspect the direct clutch or the 2nd gear accumulator. The manual also covers 2-3 slips & flare-ups, 2-1 downshift clunk, 3-2 coastdown clunk, and kickdown clunk. Each symptom has its own page range. If you see bind-up on 3-4, that’s page 12 of the section. No wiring diagrams to misinterpret – just the hydraulic and mechanical cause.

AXOD Shift Quality and Planetary Gear Train Failure

AXOD transmissions were used in Ford Taurus and Sable. Common issues: shift quality complaints and planetary gear train failures. The manual breaks down shift quality into five pages of diagnostics – page 1 through 5 for the AXOD section. Then planetary gear train failure covers pages 6-8. If you’re seeing 2-1 downshift clunks, that’s page 9-10. No movement? Page 11. T.V. pressure problems bog down the whole shift map, and the manual gives you the correct TV pressure specs and adjustment procedure. I’ve used this section to fix three AXODs that other shops had given up on. You need the factory pressure readings, not aftermarket approximations.

A4LD Pressure Testing and Direct Clutch Problems

The A4LD is a Ranger/Bronco II four-speed. Pressure testing starts on page 1 of that section. You’ll find the exact port locations and the pressure ranges at idle and stall. Direct clutch problems – page 2 – are a common cause of no forward engagement. The manual includes servo assembly application charts on pages 7-8. Those charts tell you which servo bore and which apply pin to use for each transmission application. Get that wrong and you’ll have delayed shifts or burned clutches. The manual also covers diagnosing no 4th gear, downshift problems, shift timing, engine stall, front seal blowout, and vent leaks. There is a parts interchange list on page 14 that cross-references later-model parts into earlier units.

Diagnosing No 4th Gear on the A4LD

No fourth gear on an A4LD is often a direct clutch or governor issue. The manual gives you a specific diagnostic flow: check governor pressure, then check the direct clutch feed circuit. If the governor isn’t putting out enough pressure at speed, the trans won’t shift into overdrive. The procedure is on page 3 of the A4LD section. You’ll also find how to test the solenoid and the lock-up apply valve. This is not a generic “check the fluid level” guide. This is the same procedure ATRA seminar instructors taught in 1990. If you follow it, you’ll find the problem in half the time.

Lock-Up Diagnostics: Checking for 12 Volts at Terminal A

Lock-up problems – no torque converter clutch apply, shudder, or no release. The manual has a dedicated Lock-Up section with charts. The first thing: check for 12 volts to terminal A at the transmission connector. Page 1 of the Lock-Up section. If you don’t have voltage, back up to the fuse (page 3) and the brake switch (page 4). There are quick and regular methods for checking ground at terminal D. The manual even covers the ALDL quick method – you can jumper the ALDL connector and probe the transmission connector. I’ve used that trick to diagnose a TCC circuit in minutes instead of running all new wires. The section also includes how to read trouble codes from the computer system, for transmissions that have electronic controls.

188 Pages of Factory Diagnostics

That’s the whole manual – 188 pages covering 440-T4, AXOD, A4LD, plus lock-up diagnostics, and additional sections for 700-R4, AOD, A140E, A604, and E4OD. Yes, the manual includes those too. The AOD section covers TV adjustment, low governor pressure, and shift quality. The A140E section has system layouts for Camry and MR2, solenoid resistance checks, and DG voltage testing. Every section is written by ATRA – the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association. You are getting the same material that was handed out at the 1990 ATRA seminar. This is original OEM documentation, not a third-party reprint. If you want to compare this with the 1996 ATRA Technical Seminar Training Manual or the 1997 ATRA Technical Seminar Transmission Electronics Training, those are also available. For something completely different, there’s the Drogobych Crane КТА-16, КТА-25, КТА-28 2004 Installation Manual. But for these three transmissions – 440-T4, AXOD, A4LD – this 1990 manual is the one you need.

What Torque Specs Are in This Manual?

The manual does not list every bolt torque for every fastener because it is a diagnostic manual, not a rebuild manual. What it does give you is line pressure specs, governor pressure curves, and shift timing values. For torque values on valve body bolts, pump body bolts, or bellhousing bolts, you need the factory service manual for the specific vehicle. But for diagnosing why the transmission is slipping or clunking, this ATRA manual has the hydraulic and electrical specs you need. If you are rebuilding the unit, pair this with the OEM service manual from the manufacturer – like the Automotive Industry Overview for Toyota transaxles. For Ford and GM units, check the manufacturer’s official site for the Automotive Industry Overview for additional torque specs.

Does this manual cover the AOD transmission?
Yes, the AOD section covers TV adjustment, low governor pressure, direct clutch leaks, shift quality, shift timing, downshift problems, delayed engagements, missing gears, and noises. It is on pages within the AOD chapter.
Are pressure specs given for each transmission?
Yes. For the A4LD, pressure testing starts on page 1 of that section with specific pressure ranges at idle and stall. For the 440-T4, the diagnostic trees reference line pressure checks. For the AXOD, TV pressure problems are covered. The manual gives you the numbers you need to compare against your gauge readings.
Can I use this manual for a 1992 model year transmission?
This manual was published in 1990 and covers transmission designs up to that point. Later model years may have updated valve bodies, different solenoids, or electronic control changes. For example, the A4LD used in 1992 Rangers had some changes to the governor and servo assembly. The manual’s diagnostic approach for hydraulic circuits still applies, but you should verify any specific part numbers or pressure specs against later service bulletins. The ATRA 1996 manual and later editions address those changes. This 1990 manual is best for 1980s through early 1990s units that match the design covered here.
Is this an original ATRA document?
This is the original 1990 ATRA seminar manual, 188 pages, printed by ATRA. Not a reprint. Not a scan of a copy. It is the same binder document handed out at the seminar.

If you are rebuilding a 440-T4, AXOD, or A4LD, you need the factory diagnostic trees. You need the pressure specs and the symptom-by-symptom approach that ATRA built. This manual has 188 pages of exactly that. Access the Factory Manual now.
