Description
Yanmar 4JH2E, 4JH2-TE, 4JH2-HTE, 4JH2-DTE, 4JH2-UTE 2001 Service Manual

Yanmar 4JH2E, 4JH2-TE, 4JH2-HTE, 4JH2-DTE, 4JH2-UTE 2001 Service Manual – if you are turning wrenches on any of these marine diesels, you need the factory book. I have seen too many guys guess at injection timing and end up with a hard-starting, smoking engine. This is not a reprint of some aftermarket rewrite. This is the original OEM publication from 2001, 406 pages, printed by Yanmar themselves. Every torque value in here came off their test stand. No third-party interpretation.
Yanmar built these engines for commercial and pleasure craft. The 4JH2E is the naturally aspirated version; add a turbo and you get the 4JH2-TE. The 4JH2-HTE and 4JH2-DTE are high-output and direct-injection variants, and the 4JH2-UTE is the updated common-rail model. The manual covers all five. If you are rebuilding a cylinder head, setting crankshaft end play, or troubleshooting the camshaft timing, you need the OEM data.
Engine Overhaul Coverage: Cylinder Block to Camshaft
Chapter 2 is where the heavy work lives. You get inspection and servicing procedures for the cylinder block, cylinder liners, cylinder head, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft and main bearings, camshaft and tappets, timing gear, and flywheel housing. Each section lists the required tool list and the factory tolerances. For example, the crankshaft main bearing clearance is given in thousandths of an inch. That is the difference between a reliable rebuild and a seized motor. Page 10-31 has the updated tightening torque for the crankshaft V-pulley bolt – cast iron pulley, not the old steel one. Yanmar issued a revision in April 2001. This manual includes it.
Does the Manual Include the 4JH2-UTE?
Yes. The history of revision on page i lists the 4JH2-UTE explicitly. The manual was updated in April 2001 to add torque specs for bolts and nuts, injection timing changes, and the remote control cable nut torque for the KBW20/21 gear. If you are working on a 4JH2-UTE, you have the correct factory data. No need to hunt down a supplement.
3 Torque Specs You Cannot Afford to Miss
Page 10-31 of the manual lists the bolt/nut tightening torque for general use. Page 1-4 gives the engine specifications. Three critical ones: cylinder head bolts, main bearing cap bolts, and the crankshaft V-pulley bolt. The manual also includes the standard tightening torque for the flywheel bolts and the connecting rod nuts. Use a calibrated torque wrench every time. If you skip this step, you are inviting leaks or a snapped bolt. I have seen both.
Get the Fuel Injection Timing Right the First Time
Chapter 3 covers the entire fuel injection equipment – pump, governor, nozzles, and injection timing. The VE pump adjustment procedure is on pages 3-19 to 3-21. You will find the test bench adjustment data, the timer construction, and the magnet valve wiring. The manual walks you through bleeding the system and checking injection timing with a timing light. This is where aftermarket manuals fail: they give you a generic spec. Yanmar gives you the specific timing mark alignment for each model. That is the difference between a smooth idle and a knock that sounds like a loose rod.
Fuel Injection Pump: Factory Disassembly Procedure
Section 3 in Chapter 3 details disassembly, reassembly, and inspection of the fuel injection pump. It includes the governor disassembly and the fuel feed pump service data. The manual also lists the special tools required – tool numbers are given. Do not try to wing it with a screwdriver and a hammer. You need the puller for the injection pump gear. The manual says so.
One thing I respect about this Yanmar book: it tells you when to stop and check. Chapter 2 section 7 on camshaft and tappets has a note about tappet clearance adjustment. It gives the cold clearance for intake and exhaust valves. If you miss that step, the engine will burn valves. The manual is not trying to sell you anything; it is trying to keep the engine together.
- What models does this manual cover?
- 4JH2E, 4JH2-TE, 4JH2-HTE, 4JH2-DTE, and 4JH2-UTE.
- How many pages and what year?
- 406 pages, published 2001.
- Does it include torque specs for the cylinder head?
- Yes. Torque specs for cylinder head bolts are in Chapter 2 and the updated values on page 10-31. The manual gives tightening sequence and torque in ft-lbs.
- Where can I find the injection timing procedure?
- It is in Chapter 3, section 12. The manual provides a step-by-step procedure for bleeding and checking injection timing, including the correct timing marks and pump alignment. This is critical for marine diesel engines because even a slight timing error can cause hard starting, smoke, or loss of power. Make sure you have a timing light and the correct tools as listed in the tools section of the same chapter. The procedure includes both static and dynamic timing checks.
Page 10-31 has the torque values. That is the page I dog-ear in every copy I own. Do not rely on memory. Use the manual.

If you are rebuilding the reduction gear – either KBW20/21 or KM4A – Chapter 7 covers disassembly, reassembly, and special tools. The gear is essentially a Manual Transmission with hydraulic shift. Do not skip the remote control adjustment in Chapter 8; the clutch lever nut torque is on page 8-3. For the electrical system, Chapter 9 has wiring diagrams for the starter, alternator, and instrument panel. It also covers optional air heaters and electric stop devices. The manual ends with Chapter 10 on complete disassembly and reassembly, including test running procedures. You need this book in the bilge with you, not a tablet that dies after ten minutes. Access the Factory Manual – PDF format, searchable, print the pages you need. Keep it dry. Use it.
