Description
Volkswagen Touareg Training Manual – Factory Chassis and Drivetrain Course (SSP 302)

I’ve been wrenching on German stuff for almost three decades, and I can tell you the difference between a tech who understands a system and one who just follows aftermarket instructions. The Volkswagen Touareg Training Manual (SSP 302) is the same material VW uses to train its own factory technicians. If you’re trying to diagnose a Touareg that’s sagging on its air suspension or has a locking differential that won’t engage, guessing is expensive. This 60-page course gives you the design and function of every major chassis and drivetrain system – no repair procedures, but a thorough understanding that keeps you from breaking parts.
Suspensión Neumática – Design and Function
Air suspension on the Touareg is complex. The manual dedicates multiple sections starting on page 15: level control, damping adjustment, the air supply unit, pressure accumulator, and the tire inflation port. You’ll see how the system modifies ride height and switches between jack mode. Without this knowledge, a simple strut replacement can turn into a compressor burnout or a torn air line. The manual shows the sensor/actuator layout and system schematic – stuff you won’t find in a Chilton.
Does the Manual Cover the Locking Differentials?
Yes – that’s on pages 46 through 55. The Touareg transfers power through a transfer case with a reduction gear and up to 100% torque to one axle. The electronic differential locks (EDS) work with the ABS system. The manual explains the mechanical operation of the differentials and the electronic drivetrain management. If you’re trying to figure out why a diff isn’t locking, this is where you start.
60 Pages – What You Actually Get
You get 60 pages of factory training material. The quick-reference index lists: front axle (page 8), rear axle (11), spring-strut system (14), air suspension (15), brake system (28), steering (40), wheels and tires (41), tire pressure monitoring (42), locking differentials (46), service (56), and a knowledge test (57). Each section explains the design, component location, and how the system works. Volkswagen Touareg 2011 Service Training Manual and Volkswagen Phaeton Touareg 3.0l V6 TDI Training Manual are related but focus on different model years and engines. This one is pure chassis and drivetrain.
Brake System: ABS, ESP, and Off-Road Assistants
The Continental/Teves MK 25 ABS/ESP unit is covered in detail – the manual doesn’t list repair steps, but it diagrams the hydraulic circuits and sensor inputs. You’ll learn about the electronic differential lock (EDS), hill ascent and descent assistants, and off-road ABS calibration. If you’re chasing a brake fault that only happens off-road, this is the document that explains why the system behaves differently. Directions and steering system (page 40) are included too.
Service and Knowledge Test – How It Helps
Page 56 lists special tools for Touareg chassis work. Page 57 is a knowledge test – exact questions VW uses to certify techs. Run through those and you’ll know if you actually understand the material. That’s something no aftermarket manual offers. Volkswagen Touareg 2011 8-Speed Automatic Gearbox Training pairs well if you need the transmission side. For industry context, see Automotive Industry Overview and Automotive Industry Overview.
Source Authenticity – OEM vs Aftermarket
This is an original Volkswagen Self-Study Program (SSP 302). Not a reprint, not a scan of a scan. The PDF is clean, the diagrams are legible, and the part names are factory-correct. I’ve seen aftermarket manuals call a CV joint a “constant velocity joint” – that’s fine, but they often miss the Touareg-specific axle bearing preload procedure. This manual won’t give you torque specs for the knuckle bolt, but it will tell you why the front axle design reduces NVH. That’s information you need before you start torquing.
- Is this a repair manual?
- No. It is a training manual covering system design and operation.
- What does the manual cover exactly?
- The manual walks through the front and rear axles, coil-over strut systems, air suspension including level control, damping adjustment, the air supply unit, accumulator, and tire inflation port. Braking systems covered include the Continental/Teves MK25 ABS/ESP unit, electronic diff lock (EDS), hill ascent and descent assistants, and off-road ABS. Steering, wheels, tires, and the tire pressure monitoring system (RDK) with sensors G222-G225 are explained. Locking differentials and the electronic drivetrain management are detailed. The service section lists special tools and a knowledge test.
- Can I use this to replace my air struts?
- It explains the system layout and component function. For replacement steps, you need the factory service manual. This manual ensures you understand how the system works before touching it.
- Is this manual in English?
- No, the original training manual is in Spanish. The product page is in English.
If you’re working on a Touareg and need to understand the drivetrain and suspension, access the factory manual. It’s 60 pages of what Volkswagen teaches its own technicians.
